Flu Prevention What We Can Do … To Prevent the Flu … And Other Germy Conditions Dr Steve Chaney Barbara Lagoni Hannah Sharapan Jo Coogan

Flu Facts Flu Season -- October through April … The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death Over a period of 30 years, between 1976 and 2006, estimates of flu-associated deaths in the United States range from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people. 47 states reporting serious flu outbreaks Antibiotics don’t work against virusesBL

When you examine the scientific literature it is clear that: The risks of the flu shot have been greatly exaggerated. The benefits of the flu shot have been greatly exaggerated. The medical profession has not leveled with us about the real reason they recommend that everyone get a flu shot. steve Philosophy Behind Flu Vaccinations

The Truth About Flu Vaccinations Flu vaccinations have no proven effectiveness in children ages 6 months to two years, children aged 6-18 years and seniors 65 years old and older For children aged 2-7, nasal sprays give 17% decrease in absolute risk of catching the flu. For adults aged 18-65, flu shots give 3% decrease in absolute risk of catching the flu. Steve – October 21

Why Flu Vaccinations Are Promoted So Heavily They are public health measures, pure & simple The very young, the very old and very sick are most susceptible to severe complications from the flu AND flu vaccinations offer little benefit because their immune systems are week. If you are a healthy adult, the flu shot is less about protecting you than it is about protecting those whom you might infect if you caught even a mild case of the flu. Steve – October 21

Flu Symptoms Fever* or feeling feverish/chills Cough Sore throat Runny or stuffy nose Muscle or body aches Headaches Fatigue (very tired) Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.hannah

Entero Virus This is the largest outbreak of EV-D68 ever recorded. Cases have been reported in 45 states and the District of Columbia. Though the CDC has confirmed 664 cases as of Wednesday, there are undoubtedly many, many more cases that are causing milder cold-like illnesses. Enteroviruses are very common, with 10 to 15 million infections in the United States a year. They usually cause mild illness, if they make people sick at all. "This is different this year, what we're seeing," Milstone said. "Something is different.“ Some patients have become sick enough to end up in the intensive care unit on oxygen. Many have wheezing, even those who don't have asthma. Parents shouldn't worry about runny noses and sniffles, Schuchat says, but should act quickly if a child has difficulty breathing. "This can be a scary thing to hear about for parents," "If your child is having difficulty breathing, you want to get medical attention." And parents of children with asthma should make extra-sure that the children are taking medications and the asthma is well controlled, she adds. steve There is no vaccine or specific treatment for EV-68.HealthyNews from NPR

People who cannot get the nasal spray vaccine Children younger than 2 years Adults 50 years and older People with a history of severe allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine or to a previous dose of any influenza vaccine People allergic to eggs Children or adolescents (2 years through 17 years of age) on long-term aspirin treatment. Pregnant women People with weakened immune systems (immunosuppression)steve Children 2 years through 4 years who have asthma or who have had a history of wheezing in the past 12 months. People who have taken influenza antiviral drugs within the previous 48 hours. People who care for severely immuno-compromised persons who require a protective environment (or otherwise avoid contact with those persons for 7 days after getting the nasal spray vaccine). from CDC

People who can't get the flu shot: Children younger than 6 months are too young to get a flu shot People with severe, life-threatening allergies to flu vaccine or any ingredient in the vaccine. This might include gelatin, antibiotics, or other ingredients. steve Note: There are certain flu shots that have different age indications. For example people younger than 65 years of age should not get the high dose flu shot and people who are younger than 18 years old or older than 64 years old should not get the intradermal flu shot

People who should talk to their doctor before getting the flu shot: If you have an allergy to eggs or any of the ingredients in the vaccine. Talk to your doctor about your allergy. If you ever had Guillain-Barré Syndrome (a severe paralyzing illness, also called GBS). Some people with a history of GBS should not get this vaccine. Talk to your doctor about your GBS history. If you are not feeling well. Talk to your doctor about your symptoms.steve

People who should talk to their doctor before getting nasal spray vaccine: There are also other “warnings and precautions” for the nasal spray flu vaccine. You should talk to your doctor if you have any of these: Asthma: People of any age with asthma might be at increased risk for wheezing after getting the nasal spray vaccine. A chronic condition like lung disease, heart disease, kidney or liver disorders, neurologic/neuromuscular, or metabolic disorders. The safety of the nasal spray vaccine has not been established in people with underlying medical conditions that place them at high risk of serious flu complications. If you ever had Guillain-Barré Syndrome (a severe paralyzing illness, also called GBS). Some people with a history of GBS should not get this vaccine. If you have gotten any other vaccines in the past 4 weeks, or if you are not feeling well.steve
