Baltimore The setting of arguably the greatest TV show ever made (The Wire), Baltimore, has a reputation for violence, poverty, homelessness and drugs Baltimore has longed been called the ‘Charm City’ – However these days it is now infamously known as ‘Harm City’ It is home to ‘the projects’ where life bears little resemblance to the American Dream painted so vividly in some other TV shows and films Watch this video clip which examines some of the issues in Baltimorevideo clip

Education and the Criminal Justice System Choose a partner to work with Look at the question below and create a mind map in your revision jotters which helps answer it Why might a young person growing up in the projects of Baltimore in the USA have a poor chance of doing well with education and healthcare, but a good chance of getting into trouble with the police?

A Life in ‘Harm City’ Remain in your pairs Your task is to create a biography/timeline for a persons life who is born in the projects in Baltimore You have to chart their life from their birth through to their incarceration on their 21 st birthday, showing how their life was blighted by the inequalities of various social factors You can have as many events on it as you wish but there should be a minimum of 6

Example Born – Name, date, parents name, parents employment history Place events along the timeline that show the influence of the various social factors Celebrates 21 st birthday by being sent to prison
