Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 2 April 2, 2009 Spiral 2 funding and beyond Subcontract structure –1 year subcontract –+ 2 option years Ongoing GPO evaluation of all subcontracts –No sudden death... –... but projects with sustained under-performance will not have their options funded –GPO will work closely with under-performing projects to try to help them meet their objectives Money freed up by non-renewals will go to high- performing projects as additional funds

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 3 April 2, 2009 Project milestones (GENI Wiki / Trac) and yes, we do track GPO milestones too! Milestone: CMU Lab: desired node config & boot mgmt functionality 2 months late (02/01/09) 0% Closed tickets: 0 Active tickets: 1 Task 1: Node configuration and boot management. Configure software to allow remote, residential nodes to "check in", receive disk images to boot, software updates, account management, etc. Step 1c. desired functionality (4mo) Milestone: INSTOOLS: Upgrade UKY Emulab 2 months late (02/01/09) 100% Closed tickets: 1 Active tickets: 0 Upgrade the University of Kentucky existing EduLab facility to become a GENI prototype system. Optimize Internet2 network connection. Milestone: DigitalObjectRegistry: Plan to meet registry needs of at least one control framework. 2 months late (02/02/09) 50% Closed tickets: 1 Active tickets: 1 Analyze the five control framework clusters being funded for GENI Spiral 1, to understand how the Handle System and/or a Digital Object Registry could be utilized to realize the principal, slice and/or component registries necessary to build a GENI clearinghouse, and define a plan to meet a registry need in one (or more) of these control frameworks for Spiral 1. Note that we’re not singling out these projects; we just needed an example.

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 5 April 2, 2009 GENI Solicitation 2 – Many topnotch proposals Total: 91 proposals received Security Experiments How are we doing?

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 6 April 2, 2009 Solicitation 2 status and outlook Estimated timeline –Panel reviews underway –First panel review was last Friday –Last review will be ~ April 13 –GPO then writes proposal to NSF –Review, reverse site visit, etc. –GPO subcontract negotiations with campuses and companies –Current expectation: Sept 1 start work Estimated funding levels –Solicitation 2 guidance still seems a good estimate –$3.5 million / year for 3 years –GPO proposes, but NSF is in charge –Stimulus funds are still a great cloud of dust, with outcome unknown to everyone!

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 7 April 2, 2009 Wrap-up All in all, the GENI project is in great shape Thanks to you, GENI is... –Accelerating very rapidly –Shaking out prototypes on a truly national scale – much faster than anyone imagined –Extremely creative, nimble, and forward-looking –Tremendous fun Thank you for a great ride!
