Before laws were passed making housing discrimination against the law, landlords, real estate agents and others could do things to prevent certain people (African Americans and Hispanics) from renting, buying or insuring a home that they wanted without ever being punished. FAIR HOUSING FOR ALL! Utah Antidiscrimination & Labor Division The Fair Housing Law was first passed in April 1968 shortly after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. What is The FAIR HOUSING Law?

Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act), as amended, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status (including children under the age of 18 living with parents or legal custodians, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18), and disability. The Fair Housing Law means that you and your family have equal opportunity to choose where to live without being discriminated against or treated differently than other people, depending only on whether you are able to pay the rent or mortgage.
