Govt. High School, Kalyan This is a story of a rich rice merchant, Subbiah. He had five children. His house was very big and his wife had lot of gold ornaments. He lend money to people on high rates of interest.

HALF A RUPEE WORTH Govt. High School, Kalyan During the war, his profits piled up. Subbiah also found the solution by giving the bribe to Govt. officials. He converted one his house into big godown.

HALF A RUPEE WORTH Govt. High School, Kalyan One evening as he had just closed his shop, a person came and requested to give him rice worth half a rupee. He took coin and told him to wait there.

HALF A RUPEE WORTH Govt. High School, Kalyan The man waited for Subbiah for 3 hours but he didn’t come. He called at Subbiah house. Subbiah’s wife became very anxious when Subbiah did not come by six next morning.

HALF A RUPEE WORTH Govt. High School, Kalyan Now Subbiah was looked for in his godown. They saw his dead body under the fallen bags of rice. There was a half rupee coin in his hand.

Ans 1 :- During the drought, subbiah would go round the countryside and collect as much rice as he could. He would sell it at a very high rate and earn huge profits. Back to Q 2

Ans 2:- Subbiah was then a young boy. Like other boys, he longed to and enjoy life in the open. But his father would not allow him to leave the shop. Naturally subbiah loathed the rice bags. Back to Q 3

Ans 3:- Subbiah had spent all his day with his father in his rice shop. Thus he new all about rice and the rice business. It could be said that rice was in his blood. Back to Q 4

Ans 4:- During the war, there was scarcity of rice. Subbiah sold his stock at very high rate and made big profit. He followed the rules on paper, not in practice. He bribed the officers who came to check his stock and accounts. Back to Q 5

Ans 5:- Subbiah lent money at very high rates of interest. If people failed to pay back his money, he would acquire there houses. Thus he earned more and more money. Back to Q 6

Ans 6:- A person came to buy some rice. Subbiah refused to give him any. He said that he had some other business. But then he agreed to give the rice, but only half a seer for eight annas. Back to Q 7

Ans 7:- Subbiah agreed to sell him half a seer of rice for half a rupee. Back to Q 8

Ans 8:- Subbiah did not want anyone to know about his secret godown. So, he asked the man to wait. He said that he would have to go and bring rice from some other man. Back to Q 9

Ans 9:- He went to his secret godown to get the rice. This godown was situated in the back street. Back to Q 10

Ans 10:- The man waited for a long time. He came in the evening and waited till morning. Then he went to Subbiah’s wife who took him to the godown. Back to Q 11

Ans 11:- The man went to Subbiah’s home. There he asked Subbiah’s wife about Subbiah. The wife took the to Subbiah’s godown. Back to Q 12
