Govt. High School, Kalyan This is a story of a rich rice merchant, Subbiah. He had five children. His house was very big and his wife had lot of gold ornaments. He lend money to people on high rates of interest.

HALF A RUPEE WORTH Govt. High School, Kalyan During the war, his profits piled up. Subbiah also found the solution by giving the bribe to Govt. officials. He converted one his house into big godown.

HALF A RUPEE WORTH Govt. High School, Kalyan One evening as he had just closed his shop, a person came and requested to give him rice worth half a rupee. He took coin and told him to wait there.

HALF A RUPEE WORTH Govt. High School, Kalyan The man waited for Subbiah for 3 hours but he didn’t come. He called at Subbiah house. Subbiah’s wife became very anxious when Subbiah did not come by six next morning.

Ans 1 :- During the drought, subbiah would go round the countryside and collect as much rice as he could. He would sell it at a very high rate and earn huge profits. Back to Q 2

Ans 2:- Subbiah was then a young boy. Like other boys, he longed to and enjoy life in the open. But his father would not allow him to leave the shop. Naturally subbiah loathed the rice bags. Back to Q 3
