What is FOG? FOG is a term for animal or plant based Fat, Oil and Grease. Where does FOG come From? -Commercial / Industrial and Residential cooking and cleaning of foodstuffs and cookware

Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) Program Goals Goals: To reduce FOG in Sanitary Sewer System and to the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) Less FOG entering the Collection system and WWTP means, lower operation and maintenance costs

South San Francisco FOG Program Encompasses a total of 3 cities: –South San Francisco –San Bruno –Part of Colma Approximately 350 Food Service Establishments (FSE) in service area

Essential Pieces of a FOG Program Identification of facilities: –Business license application process –Building permits –Finding businesses while in the field

Essential Pieces of a FOG Program Permitting –Reviewing permit applications –Issuing permits Applications - Sending / Receiving paperwork - Fee collection

Essential Pieces of a FOG Program Inspection/ Follow up –Facility inspection –Following up with requirements –Enforcement of regulations Facilities inspected once a year at minimum for compliance

Public Outreach Majority of Public outreach to commercial and industrial facilities is preformed during inspections and site visits. Residential Public Outreach Events –Sewer science to high schools –Pollution Prevention at elementary schools –County fair –Citizens academy –Farmers market

Outcomes from a Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) Program Reduction of FOG in sewer system means fewer FOG related Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSO’s), and blockages Giving the residents and the public a better understanding on FOG disposal Compliance with regulations put forth by the state and Non Governmental Organizations (NGO’s)
