Vision We aim to provide electricity to 10 million energy deprived people across the world in over 10,000 villages by installing 3000 plants by HPS will create 2500 small entrepreneurs and over 7,000 jobs within the communities it serves.

 Husk Power Systems (HPS) provides access to electricity to rural households through small scale biomass-based systems and distributes power through a microgrid.  HPS was formally incorporated in 2008 and is based in Patna, Bihar, India.  The first power plant was set up in 2007 under Samta Samriddhi Foundation in Tamkuha village, which means “fog of darkness.”  Secured commercial capital in December 2009 from firms around the world.  Established strategic partnership with Shell Foundation for capacity building, establishing heath and safety procedures and training infrastructure.  HPS currently manages over 80 plants that provide electricity to over 200,000 people spread across 300 villages. Easy to operate model HPS Total Landed Cost of Installation < $1,300 per kW * Operational Cost is < $0.15/kWh HPS Total Landed Cost of Installation < $1,300 per kW * Operational Cost is < $0.15/kWh “Due to HPS’s extensive R&D efforts, the company today is one of the world’s lowest cost providers of biomass based renewable energy equipment” Note: * Landed cost includes Equipment cost, basic construction and cost of wiring a small village - may vary based on country.  HPS uses a biomass gasification based proprietary electricity generation process, that generates electricity using 100% producer gas based system (“single fuel mode”).  HPS distributes electricity directly to households and small businesses while keeping costs low by running insulated wires along bamboo poles to subscribing households, businesses and farms.

Solving Access to Energy Problem

Multiple revenue streams contributing to economic sustainability and impact * Char: Rice Husk Char is a waste product of biomass gasification process HPS plants may provide electricity for up to hours each day. HPS charges US$2.0 – US$2.5 per household per month for lighting up 2 CFLs and one mobile charging point for 6-8 hrs in the evening The entire distribution network is set up by HPS and the cost is included as part of the project cost

Technology and HPS’s Proprietary Solutions  Multi-fuel gasifiers: Gasifiers can use multiple types of feedstock such as rice husk, wheat husk, mustard stems, corn cobs, wood chips etc.  Unique gasifier design: allows for easy disposal of biomass char, lack of which results in tar formation;  Remote Plant Monitoring System: low cost system to monitor plant performance via internet;  Pre-paid meters: Cheapest pre-paid meter at US$8 per consumer. Enables electricity to be sold like mobile phone talk-times where consumers get their meter charged with the amount of money they have and the meter automatically disconnects supply after the credit is exhausted;

Franchise Growth Model To replicate and scale-up its business model, Husk Power has introduced a franchise model whereby it will partner with other local players to roll out its plants. Husk Power  HPS provides technology and equipment;  HPS trains the team;  HPS provides maintenance and repair support;  HPS facilitates monetization of the by-product char;  HPS supports issuance and sale of carbon credits  HPS facilitates processing of relevant subsidy applications; Franchisee Partner  Responsible for site selection and doing preliminary due diligence;  Responsible for identifying manpower for plant operations;  Responsible for obtaining local regulatory approvals;  Responsible for day to day operations including husk procurement, cash collection;  Responsible for payment of maintenance fees to HPS;

Compelling Value Proposition Flexible solution with no capital cost for consumers: unlike solar lantern companies, the solution provides generic electricity which can be used for needs beyond lighting; also has flexibility to integrate with grid; Provides employment to rural households; Demonstrated a scalable business model through 4 yrs of operations  Plants have been operating for over 50 months at ~ 93% uptime  Trained about 350 operators and mechanics till date High quality training program for franchisee, operators and mid-level managers developed in partnership with Shell Foundation and IFC; HPS has invested over $1.5M and 4 years of on-ground efforts to mitigate technology, maintenance and training related risks  Developed in-house low cost smart-meter, MIS and remote monitoring technology HPS will dedicate senior managers, engineers and trainers’ time to ensure success of a franchisee 11
