Schoolwide Writing Fundamentals Research Based Instructional Units Connecting Reading and Writing in a Teacher- Friendly Format

Each Writing Unit Includes: Mentor texts Book display bin Explicit mini-lessons Graphic organizers Binders to organize lessons Letters to parents Homework assignments Student self-assessment Teacher rubric

Writers Work Units of Study Include: 10 Mentor Texts 18-20 explicit mini-lessons Student self-assessment Teacher rubric: Process – Behavior of Writer Product –Assess quality of writing 1 storage bin and 1 binder

Why is Writing Fundamentals Good for ELLs? Connects reading and writing Uses multicultural books Uses Graphic organizers Provides a blueprint for explicit instruction and the tools to differentiate instruction. Each grade level knows which area of writing they are teaching

Immersion Interactive Read Aloud that helps children notice features of the read aloud text. Helps children notice decisions that writers and illustrators make to engage the reader choose Exposes children to authentic models of literature Interactive read alouds teach craft elements and genre features in narrative, informational and opinion texts

Writing Workshops Instruction is guided as children read books and hear read-alouds. Students are taught to notice writing features in good literature and in informational texts.
