How do I receive the Helper? (1) Hunger and Thirsting page 49 Man does not live by bread alone! Deuteronomy 8:3 Matthew 4:4 Luke 4:4 Hunger for the Word of God ! Page 49 – The 1st condition is to understand the value of what you are requesting! To fully receive the gift, you must be absolute in your faith. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. Revelation 3:15-16

Luke 11: 1-13 Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer 11 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say: “‘Father,[a] holly is your name, your kingdom come.[b] 3 Give us each day our daily bread. 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.[c] And lead us not into temptation.[d]’” (Matthew 6:9-13) 5 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ 7 And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity[e] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need. 9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. (Matthew 7:7-11) 11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Other chapter Scripture Reading 1 John 5:14-15 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. 1 John 3:22 22 and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight. Also see Luke 18:1-6, the parable of the widow and Judge.

Without the Spirit, we do not have… (Page 50) Without the Spirit, we do not have… Personal awareness of God’s love Conviction of who Christ is Fruits of the Spirit Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Gifts of the Spirit 1 Corinthians 12: 4-11 Any help in our weakness Freedom from sin and harmful habits An Intercessor with the Father Joy

Hunger and Thirst A Christian life not lived in the Spirit – is not a life of Joy! John 10:10 I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. Matthew 5:6 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,   for they will be filled. John 7:37-39 37 .... “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Page 51 Hunger and thirsting before we can be granted this gift! Dr. R.A. Torrey “I am never going to enter the pulpit again until I have been baptized with the Holy Spirit and know it, or until God in some ways tells me to go” Then, I shut myself up in my study… “If I had understood the Bible as I do now, there need not have passed any days” Asking for the gift of the Spirit with passionate persistence The NEXT STEP is to ask and Jesus will GIVE. It is not really a matter of “asking” for the HOLY SPIRIT to come in – but to unleash the power of the Spirit that is within you! Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ, because he gives me strength.

1 John 5:14-15 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
