He erected an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he built in Samaria. And Ahab made an Asherah. Ahab did more to provoke the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him” (1 Ki 16:31-33, ESV).

Immediately after we read of Ahab’s gross idolatry, we are told of this great drought.

Baal was the pagan god of rain & thunder. God’s message: “Ahab, you worship Baal in order to bring rain upon the land. Let me tell you something: It’s the LORD who brings rain, and the LORD shall send a drought that your worship of Baal cannot reverse.”

A WIDOW’S TABLE  Elijah went to the brook Cherith where the LORD sent ravens with food.

A WIDOW’S TABLE  “Then the word of the Lord came to [Elijah], ‘Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.’ So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, ‘Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.’ And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, ‘Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.’ And she said, ‘As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die’” (vv 8-12, ESV).

A WIDOW’S TABLE  The LORD instructed Elijah to travel to Sidon, because he had commanded a widow to feed him.

A WIDOW’S TABLE  “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Phil 4:11-13, ESV).

But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction” (1 Tm 6:6-9, ESV).
