Sources of Litter Good news: Overall amount of litter is down 61% since 1969 Bad news: plastic litter is up 165% Sources of roadside litter: Motorists (52%) Pedestrians (22.8%) Improperly covered truck or cargo loads (16.4%) Litter costs the US almost $11.5 billion annually; businesses pay $9.1 billion of that total. 81% of littering occurred with notable intent. *Source: KAB Litter Study 2009
