Presentation transcript:

James Mythbuste r John Guenther, Penguin Baptist Church 24 October 2010

Who is James and why did he write?  Quite likely James the brother of Jesus and early church leader (Acts 15, 21)  Written to scattered Jewish Christians  My contention is that he wrote to dispel some deep- seated myths among these Jewish believers  Given these things it is not surprising that we see a polemic of sorts against accepted Jewish norms and values  We would also expect to find strong reference to the teachings of Jesus  James is often considered an exponent of faith and works but I think he is more than that Plausible

JAS 1:1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings. JAS 1:2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does. Confirmed

JAS 1:9 The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. 10 But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business. JAS 1:12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. JAS 1:13 When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Confirmed

JAS 1:16 Don't be deceived, my dear brothers. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created. JAS 1:19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Confirmed

JAS 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does. JAS 1:26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. Confirmed

8 myths put to the test Myth 1. Faith is meant to be easy Myth 2. Faith depends on others' knowledge or wisdom (you can’t be blamed for what you don’t know) Myth 3. Wealth is a sign of blessing or righteousness Myth 4. Temptation is an excuse for sin Myth 5. Because my circumstances have changed God has changed Myth 6. Faith is just about belief Myth 7. Religious ritual is faith Myth 8. There is no point in asking God because He doesn’t give.

How does he bust these myths?  Because of his authority as an apostle  Because of his intimate relationship with Jesus (as brother and disciple)  Because of his deep understanding of Jesus’ teaching  He is a pragmatist—his letter is filled with everyday examples and everyday images. Confirmed

Myth 1: Faith is meant to be easy Arises from  A view that God’s favour means comfort to the believer.  This myth is alive and well today James says  JAS 1:2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds  MT 5:11 "Blessed are you when people insult you… Why?

Myth 2: Wisdom is for a select few Arises from  A belief that wisdom is a special gift conferred only on those who are favoured by God  Today, we see some who say they are imbued with special powers. Beware. James says  5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God Why?  Lk 10:21 Father…you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children

Myth 3: Wealth is a sign of blessing or righteousness Arises from  A false assumption that material ‘blessing’ is a sign of God’s favour  Alive and well today among those who preach the ‘prosperity’ gospel. James says  JAS 1:9 The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. Why?  LK 6:20 Looking at his disciples, he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

Myth 4: Temptation is an excuse for sin Arises from  A view that God ‘tests’ us with temptations  A convenient belief for those who want an excuse for their own failures James says  no one should say, "God is tempting me." Why  LK 11:4 And lead us not into temptation.

Myth 5: Because my circumstances have changed God has changed Arises from  A false belief based on changing (for the worse) circumstances that God has changed His mind  A common pitfall for Christians today James says  Every good and perfect gift is from… the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change Why  MT 6:26 Look at the birds of the air… Are you not much more valuable than they?

Myth 6: Faith is just about belief Arises from  A misconception that salvation only requires belief and action doesn’t matter.  Many today base their views on a selective reading of ‘salvation texts’ and come to the same conclusion James says  JAS 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Why  MT 5:13 "You are the salt of the earth.

Myth 7: Religious ritual is faith Arises from  Jewish religious practices that depended on observance of rituals  Christians have fallen into the same trap today James says  JAS 1:26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Why  LK 6:9 Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?

Myth 8: There is no point in asking God because He doesn’t give (unless you are special). Arises from  A failure to get what was demanded/ wanted OR a view of God as mean unless you are particularly favoured  What’s changed? James says  JAS 1:4 …ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. Why  MT 7:7 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

Now that we have busted those myths… What would you ask for? Try this for yourself
