COMMON CORE FACTS VS. FICTION TYPE YOUR NAME

READ EACH STATEMENT AND THEN DECIDE IF IT IS TRUE OR FALSE. By adopting Common Core standards, states that already have high standards will be “lowering the bar” for students and teachers. TRUEFALSE

THAT IS FALSE  The Common Core standards are modeled after standards already utilized in states, such as Massachusetts, that already have the most challenging academic standards in the nation. What’s more, these standards have helped those states to nurture some of the highest achieving students in the country.

READ EACH STATEMENT AND THEN DECIDE IF IT IS TRUE OR FALSE Common Core standards de-emphasize the importance of reading and examining literature, particularly fiction. TRUE FALSE

THAT IS FALSE  The Common Core standards require students to examine literature from all genres of non-fiction and fiction. Greek mythology, short stories and fictional novels are just as important for analysis as historical documents, essays, articles, and other non-fiction texts.

READ EACH STATEMENT AND THEN DECIDE IF IT IS TRUE OR FALSE States are not required to adopt the Common Core standards. TRUEFALSE

THAT IS TRUE  Many people believe that the Common Core is associated with No Child Left Behind, or that states that refuse Common Core will not receive certain types of funding; however, the Common Core transition has no connection with NCLB, and while, there has been no funding incentive for states that do adopt the Common Core thus far, many leaders are calling for a moratorium on high stakes testing until states and districts have ample time to design effective curriculums based on the new standards (which is actually what is happening in PA).

READ EACH STATEMENT AND THEN DECIDE IF IT IS TRUE OR FALSE The Common Core standards are internationally benchmarked. TRUEFALSE

THAT IS TRUE  In her essay entitled “The Common Core Standards: Truths, Untruths and Ambiguities,” director of the Center for Public Education Patte Barth cites William H. Schmidt, “the nation's foremost expert in international math performance,” who found that “…the common core-math standards are comparable to the highest- achieving nations.”,

READ EACH STATEMENT AND THEN DECIDE IF IT IS TRUE OR FALSE The Common Core standards suggest difficult texts that may be too challenging for students in a particular grade level. For example, “Grapes of Wrath” is a suggested text for second graders. TRUEFALSE

THAT IS FALSE  According to a recent national survey conducted by ACT, the gap between what students are expected to know upon reaching college and university level classes and what they actually know from their high-school experiences is getting increasingly wide. A major contributor to this gap is poor choices regarding text complexity. The Common Core uses a scaffolding system that gradually increases text complexity with each grade level that students reach. Additionally, the Common Core uses research based formulas to help schools determine whether a text is appropriate according to grade level and complexity.
