THAT IS FALSE  The Common Core standards are modeled after standards already utilized in states, such as Massachusetts, that already have the most challenging academic standards in the nation. What’s more, these standards have helped those states to nurture some of the highest achieving students in the country.

THAT IS FALSE  The Common Core standards require students to examine literature from all genres of non-fiction and fiction. Greek mythology, short stories and fictional novels are just as important for analysis as historical documents, essays, articles, and other non-fiction texts.

THAT IS FALSE  According to a recent national survey conducted by ACT, the gap between what students are expected to know upon reaching college and university level classes and what they actually know from their high-school experiences is getting increasingly wide. A major contributor to this gap is poor choices regarding text complexity. The Common Core uses a scaffolding system that gradually increases text complexity with each grade level that students reach. Additionally, the Common Core uses research based formulas to help schools determine whether a text is appropriate according to grade level and complexity.
