Standardized tests are designed in such a way that the questions, conditions for administering, scoring procedures, and interpretations are consistent and are administered and scored in a predetermined and standard manner. Standardized tests need not be high-stakes tests, time-limited tests or multiple-choice tests..

Standardized testing was introduced into Europe in the early 19th century. The use of standardized testing in the United States is a 20th-century phenomenon with its origins in World War I.

Norm-referenced test score interpretations are associated with traditional education. Students who perform better than others pass the test, and students who perform worse than others fail the test. Criterion-referenced score interpretations compare test-takers to a criterion (a formal definition of content), regardless of the scores of other examinees. Criterion-referenced score interpretations are concerned solely with whether or not this particular student's answer is correct and complete. Under criterion-referenced systems, it is possible for all students to pass the test, or for all students to fail the test.

Standardized testing has not improved student achievement. Standardized tests are reliable and objective measures of student achievement. Standardized tests are an unreliable measure of student performance. Standardized tests are inclusive and non- discriminatory because they ensure content is equivalent for all students. Standardized tests measure only a small portion of what makes education meaningful. Testing is not too stressful for students.Standardized testing causes severe stress in younger students. Most students believe standardized tests are fair. Testing is expensive and costs have increased since NCLB, placing a burden on state education budgets.

© 2014 wheresjenny.com The Role of Standardized tests for College Admissions PRO Standardized Tests CON Standardized Tests Physicians, lawyers, real-estate brokers and pilots all take high-stakes standardized tests to ensure they have the necessary knowledge for their professions. An obsession with testing robs children of their childhoods. Each state's progress on NCLB tests can be meaningfully compared. Each state develops its own NCLB standards and assessments, providing no basis for meaningful comparison. Cheating by teachers and administrators on standardized tests is rare, Standardized tests are an imprecise measure of teacher performance, yet they are used to reward and punish teachers. Stricter standards and increased testing are better for preparing school students for college. Excessive testing may teach children to be good at taking tests, but does not prepare them for productive adult lives.
