Warm Up Motif-a recurring subject, theme, idea, etc., especially in a literary, artistic, or musical work. Name some motifs we have seen in Macbeth.

Act I Recap Witches planning evil involving Macbeth Battlefield-Norway vs. Scotland-Macbeth proves himself in battle Traitor Thane of Cawdor executed-Macbeth takes his place. Witches tell Macbeth he will be Thane of Cawdor and eventually king/Banquo’s son will be king.

I no longer want to be sweet and nice like some ladies. I want these spirits to make me cruel and ruthless from my head down to my toes. Thicken my blood so I am not able to feel bad about the murder I am involved in. I want no natural feelings of pity to distract me from the foul deeds I must do.

Lady Macbeth’s Soliloquy (Mr. Baun Version) Come to my breast, and replace the milk with envy and hatred. They will fuel my murderous plot. Make me like other cold-blooded killers, who secretly serve evil forces. Please give me the darkest night, and the thickest, blackest smoke from the pits of hell. I hope the night covers me from the sins I am committing. I do not want to see the stab wound, and I do not want thoughts of God to distract me from what I must do.

Act II, Scene 4 Follow along in the book as we listen to the scene. Think about nature as a central theme in Macbeth.

Nature as a Theme Continued In medieval times, it was believed that the health of a country was directly related to the goodness of its king. If the King was good and just, then the nation would have good harvests and good weather. When Macbeth murders Duncan, he disrupts the social and political order. Nature goes haywire.

How has nature gone haywire in scene 4? It’s daytime, but it’s dark outside. An owl killed a falcon. Duncan’s horses behaved wildly and ate each other.

Act II Summary Macbeth sees the bloody dagger, leading him to Duncan’s room. Macbeth forgets to leave the daggers/His manhood is questioned/Lady Macbeth takes care of it. Duncan’s body discovered/ everyone is hysterical. Macbeth says he killed the guards in his fury. Malcolm and Donalbain are afraid/They leave scotland.

For the rest of the period Finish questions in Act II packet. Write an 150 word essay: What do you think is going to happen to Macbeth? Will he live or die? If he dies, who is going to kill him. Why do you think this? Be specific.

Act 3, Scene 1 Summary Banquo asks if Macbeth’s prophecy came true, why not his? Macbeth invites Banquo to dinner/he accepts Everybody leaves/Macebth soliloquy:Banquo is the only man in Scotland he fears Two murderers enter/ Macbeth convinces them that Banquo has wronged them in the past/Questions their manhood Murderers are convinced/They agree to kill Banquo and his son, Fleance.

Act 3, Scene 2 Summary Lady Macbeth is upset/tells servant to get her husband Macbeth is also upset/feels that their work in not finished because there are still threats to the crown Macbeth tells his wife that he has planned “a deed of dreadful note”. Macbeth urges his wife to be nice to Banquo at dinner so he feels safe.

The Third Murderer 7. Why does Shakespeare hide the identity of this mysterious third murderer? (Lines 1-4) Shakespeare hides the identity of the third murderer to show the reader just how paranoid and power obsessed Macbeth really is. He obviously did not trust the two murderers to get the job done, so he secretly hired a third.

News of this plot cause Macbeth to prepare for war. Lennox and the lord agree that they hope Macduff can save Scotland from Macbeth.
