Nature as a Theme Continued In medieval times, it was believed that the health of a country was directly related to the goodness of its king. If the King was good and just, then the nation would have good harvests and good weather. When Macbeth murders Duncan, he disrupts the social and political order. Nature goes haywire.

How has nature gone haywire in scene 4? It’s daytime, but it’s dark outside. An owl killed a falcon. Duncan’s horses behaved wildly and ate each other.

News of this plot cause Macbeth to prepare for war. Lennox and the lord agree that they hope Macduff can save Scotland from Macbeth.
