Green with Jealousy

Green with Jealously Definition: Jealousy expresses the desire to have the success, popularity, possessions or worship that has come to someone else, and being thereby disturbed.

God is jealous in a positive sense (Exodus 34:14). He does not like us to worship idols. Likewise a Husband can be jealous if his wife is flirting with another man (Numbers 5:14) Green with Jealously

I Corinthians 3:3 “You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men?” Green with Jealously

It was jealousy that caused Cain to murder his brother Abel It was jealousy of the brothers of Joseph that worked to eliminate him. It was jealousy of the elder brother that would not rejoice at the return of the younger prodigal brother. Green with Jealously

It was Jealousy of the popularity of Jesus that drove the religious leaders to hand Jesus over to Pilate, and ultimately led to his crucifixion. Again it was jealousy of the popularity gained by the apostles which moved the high priest and his colleagues to have them arrested and imprisoned. Green with Jealously

1.It will result in Hatred Genesis 37:4 “When (Joseph’s) brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.”Genesis 37:4 “When (Joseph’s) brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.” Green with Jealously B: What does jealousy do?

2. It will result in Planned Murder Genesis 37:17,18 “…So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.” Green with Jealously

3. It will result in Selling your own Brother Genesis 37:27,28 “Come, let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood." His brothers agreed. So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.”Genesis 37:27,28 “Come, let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood." His brothers agreed. So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.” Green with Jealously

4. It will result in Deceiving your Father Genesis 37:31,32 “Then they got Joseph's robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. They took the ornamented robe back to their father and said, "We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son's robe." Green with Jealously

5. It will result in a Troubled Conscience Genesis 42:21,22 “They said to one another, "Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that's why this distress has come upon us." Reuben replied, "Didn't I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn't listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood." Numbers 32:23 Green with Jealously

“Saul was very angry; this refrain galled him. “They have credited David with tens of thousands," he thought, "but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?" And from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David. The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully upon Saul…” 1 Samuel 18:8-10a “Saul was very angry; this refrain galled him. “They have credited David with tens of thousands," he thought, "but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?" And from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David. The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully upon Saul…” Green with Jealously 6. It will result in being tormented by the demonic

7. It will result in uncontrolled anger

1 Samuel 20: “But the next day, the second day of the month, David's place was empty again. Then Saul said to his son Jonathan, "Why hasn't the son of Jesse come to the meal, either yesterday or today?" Jonathan answered, "David earnestly asked me for permission to go to Bethlehem. He said, `Let me go, because our family is observing a sacrifice in the town and my brother has ordered me to be there. ……. (Contd) Green with Jealously

……. If I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away to see my brothers.' That is why he has not come to the king's table." Saul's anger flared up at Jonathan and he said to him, "You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don't I know that you have sided with the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of the mother who bore you? As long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established. Now send and bring him to me, for he must die!“……….. (Contd) Green with Jealously

………"Why should he be put to death? What has he done?" Jonathan asked his father. But Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him. Then Jonathan knew that his father intended to kill David.” Green with Jealously

1 Samuel 18:12 “Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with David but had left Saul.” Green with Jealously 8. It will result in living in fear

9. It will result in becoming critical Luke 15:30 “But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!' Green with Jealously

10. It will result in Disputes & Division James 4:1,2 “What causes fights & quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don't get it. You kill & covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel & fight…” Green with Jealously

C. What is the remedy for jealousy? 1. Be willing to suffer on behalf of another Christ is the best Model for us. Christ is the best Model for us. 1 Peter 3:17-18a “For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous….”1 Peter 3:17-18a “For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous….” Green with Jealously

Genesis 44:32-34 “Your servant guaranteed the boy's safety to my father. I said, `If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!' "Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord's slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers. How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery that would come upon my father."

2. Rejoicing in the success of another Jonathan liked the new song that the women were singing. He rejoiced that David had saved the Israelites from the hand of the Philistines. He was happy to see his friend honored in the popular song. He did not feel threatened by David’s success. Green with Jealously

3. Defers the Throne/Promotion to Another 1 Samuel 18:1-4 “After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his father's house. And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.” Green with Jealously

4. Encourages other Person when He is Down 1 Samuel 23:15-18 “While David was at Horesh in the Desert of Ziph, he learned that Saul had come out to take his life. And Saul's son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God. "Don't be afraid," he said. "My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this." The two of them made a covenant before the LORD…” Green with Jealously

D. So how do we overcome the sin of jealousy? Repent Stop doubting God’s love for you Stop doubting God’s justice Green with Jealously

Take every negative thought captive (2 Cor. 10:5) Meditate on Jesus: {Jesus suffered for us, the just for the unjust} Operate in the opposite spirit of compassion & kindness Green with Jealously
