NEW APPROACHES TO FORESTRY RESEARCH FUNDING RETHINKING WHO BENEFITS AND WHO PAYS John Gordon Interforest LLC

RETHINKING OUR CLIENTS OLD CLIENT VIEW HELD GOOD FOR MOST OF A CENTURY –FEDERAL AGENCIES –VERTICALLY INTEGRATED FOREST PRODUCTS INDUSTRY –NON-INDUSTRIAL PRIVATE OWNERS –FIRST TWO FUNDED THE THIRD –ALL OF US WERE PRETTY HAPPY

FEDERAL AGENCIES FEDERAL SPENDING IS AT AN ALL TIME HIGH (THE GOOD NEWS) WE ARE GETTING LESS THAN WE WERE (THE BAD NEWS) GAO SAYS DISCRETIONARY FEDERAL SPENDING IS DOOMED (THE AWFUL NEWS)

THE VERTICALLY INTEGRATED FOREST PRODUCTS INDUSTRY THE BIG PLAYERS ARE DISBANDING THEIR RESEARCH DEPARTMENTS AS THEY DIVEST THEIR LAND THEIR CONTRIBUTION WAS IMPORTANT AND IS NOW WANING THEIR NEED FOR CLASSICAL LAND BASED RESEARCH IS NEARLY OVER

NEW POTENTIAL CLIENTS TIMOS, REITS AND ARBITRAGERS/HEDGE FUNDS LAND CONSERVATION ORGANIZATIONS AND LOCAL LAND TRUSTS CONURBATIONS: CITIES AND THEIR HINTERLAND STEWARDSHIP STANDARDS ORGANIZATIONS

TIMOS INCREASE IN VALUE

TNC : LARGEST OWNER? Sustainable Forestry The Nature Conservancy has joined with the Blandin Foundation to establish a $6 million fund to permanently safeguard up to 75,000 acres of working forestland in northern Minnesota. The fund will leverage significant public and private dollars that will be used to purchase conservation easements on industrial forestland in the Itasca County region. These legally-binding agreements will limit development and subdivision, ensure sustainable forestry practices, protect wildlife habitat and guarantee public access for recreational activities….private dollars …will be used to purchase conservation easements on industrial forestland in the Itasca County region. RETHINK WHAT RESEARCH WE DO AND HOW FORESTRY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS FOCUSED ON NEW CLIENTS AND OBJECTIVES (HULL SAF TALK) “NEW” RESEARCH METHODS INTEGRATED RESEARCH SITES WORKING FOREST FOCUS APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCE/DSS

RETHINK THE “ALIGNMENT” BETWEEN RESEARCH AND TEACHING OLD MODEL: RESEARCH AND TEACHING IN EQUAL MEASURE CREATED FALLACY OF THE MIDDLE:EXCELLENCE AT EITHER VERY EXPENSIVE CREATE CENTERS OF EMPHASIS IN BOTH CREATE WAYS TO VERIFY EXCELLENCE

RETHINK SOURCES OF FUNDING “UNPRECEDENTED CONCENTRATION OF WEALTH”..PRIVATE DONORS NATURAL RESOURCE SECURITY TAP THE ‘INVESTOR CLASS’ LINK RESEARCH TO GLOBALIZATION AND TRADE

MAJOR CHANGES UNDERWAY GLOBAL REORDERING CONCENTRATION OF WEALTH URBANIZATION CONCERN ABOUT SECURITY “USER PAYS” IMPORTANCE OF FOREST SERVICES WE CAN LEAD, FOLLOW OR FALL

POSSIBLE LEADERSHIP ACTIONS PROACTIVE DIALOGUE WITH NEW CLIENTS: INVITE THEM IN FIND AND CONSTRUCT CENTERS OF EMPHASIS: INSTITUTIONAL COOPERATION MOVE FROM “PUBLIC/NATIONAL” TO “PRIVATE/GLOBAL” CONCENTRATE ON EXCELLENCE AT SERVING OTHERS: MEASURE IT
