National Schools’ Observatory Hunting for Asteroids Developed with the support of the

Liverpool Telescope We will hunt for asteroids using the world’s largest robotic telescope, the Liverpool telescope, sited on the island of La Palma. Height - 8 metres, Weight - 25 tonnes

Asteroids are rocky and metallic objects that orbit the Sun, but are too small to be considered planets. They are also known as minor planets. What are Asteroids ?

Asteroids range in size from Ceres, which has a diameter of about 1000 km (the Moon is about 3500 km), down to the size of pebbles. Only sixteen asteroids have diameters over 240 km. They have been found from inside Earth's orbit to beyond the orbit of Saturn.

Most, however, are contained within a main belt that exists between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Some even have orbits that cross Earth's path and have even hit the Earth in times past.

One of the best preserved relics of an asteroid impact on Earth is the Barringer Crater in Arizona metres 170 metres All caused by a 40 metre wide asteroid, of about 300,000 tonnes in weight

Name: Gaspra Size: 17 x 10 km This image was taken in October 1991, when the Galileo spacecraft passed within 1600 km on its way to Jupiter. (Courtesy Nasa/JPL) Name: Ida Size: 56 x 24 km Location: Asteroid Belt Image obtained in 1993 when Galileo passed within 2400 km (Courtesy Nasa/JPL). Some examples of asteroids

Name: ErosSize: 35 x 15 km This image was obtained during an approach by the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous spacecraft (Courtesy Nasa/JPL). We have even sent spacecraft to them Can you see all the craters made by the impact of other smaller asteroids ?

Asteroids on a collision course with Earth are called meteoroids. When a meteoroid strikes our atmosphere at high velocity, friction causes this chunk of space matter to incinerate in a streak of light known as a meteor. If the meteoroid does not burn up completely, what's left strikes Earth's surface and is called a meteorite.
