Background Of Joseph John Thomson Born in Cheetham Hill Manchester on December 18 th 1856 Dad won the Nobel Prize for Physics. Married Rose Elisabeth Had a daughter and son, the son won the Nobel Prize for Physics. Father died when he was sixteen Enrolled at Owens College, Manchester Applied for scholarship at Trinity College in Graduated at Cambridge. Lecturer at Trinity for the rest of his life. Died August 30 th 1940

Accomplishments Nobel Prize for Physics 1906 Royal Medal 1894 Hughes Medal in 1902 Elliot Cresson Medal in 1910 Copley Medal in 1914 Franklin Medal in 1922

The Experiments that led to the discoveries. He discovered Electrons, Isotopes and created the mass of a spectrometer. Discovered the natural radioactivity of potassium in Demonstrated Hydrogen has one electron per atom.

Experimental Data Does your scientist’s model of the atom fit with experimental data? No, because no one believed that atoms could be broken down. Everyone thought that the atom was the ultimate particle.

The Atomic Structure He proved that atoms were divisible and showed that atoms were made up of electrons, protons, and neutrons. He discovered a method for separating different kinds of atoms and molecules by the use of negative rays.
