Cherry Willingham Community School Year 9 projects –9.30: Introduction to the project and the outside visit : Timeline from Iron Age through Roman, Anglo-Saxon, mediaeval to the present day including relationship to Lincoln and River Witham, medieval history of the area of the Witham Valley and the key role of the abbeys, the manor house and the fish ponds Introduction to outside visit : Break : Full year briefing on all four projects : Visit to pond to photograph and learn about the work undertaken by the Parish Council to recover the pond, relate to the history of the village from morning session including looking at the Roman & Anglo- Saxon artefacts found in the area Lunch : Review and record first day activities and think about the next steps for day 2

Cherry Willingham Community School Year 9 projects 2012  Medieval fish pond on Lady Meers Road  Part of a group of ponds probable serving the Manor House in the village  Rescued from housing because of its historical significance and the presence of the great crested newt – which is a nationally protected species  Pond dredged and restored, fenced and landscaped  Heritage Lottery grant to develop this further and encourage further wildlife  We now want your help to design information boards so that that residents and villagers can be fully informed about its history and its natural environment

Project Aim: To design information boards to inform residents and visitors about the history of the pond in the context of the village and surrounding landscape Cherry Willingham Community School Year 9 projects To research the nature of the ponds and the history of the village and surrounding landscape and artefacts discovered in the area. 2.To consider which of this information should be displayed and to obtain the agreement of the Parish Council. 3.To research the type of boards used in other historical locations, along with the costs of each, and agree with the Parish Council on the most appropriate for this location along with a budget. 4.To produce final designs for each display and submit these to the Parish Council.

Cherry Willingham Community School Year 9 projects 2012 You are now going to research further about MEDIEVAL manor houses and fish ponds  Divide into four groups – two to research manor houses and two fish ponds  Use the internet and printed materials provided to answer the following questions. Record your findings for later reference and sharing with the other groups  What is the role of the manor house in a medieval village? What effect did it have on the ordinary villagers and their lives? What can you learn about CW manor house?  What role did fish ponds play in providing food for the manor house and villagers? Why did they need to build them? What was needed to make a good site for them? Where did the fish come from and how did they catch them?

Cherry Willingham Community School Year 9 projects 2012 Outside visit: You are going out to the pond where you will meet Alex Thornton an archaeologist working for Lincolnshire Historical Environment Records  You will walk to the pond where Alex will talk to you about both some archaeological finds which come from Mr Jones’ garden  She will explain something about their history and how archaeologists work to find such pieces and identify them  Cllr Anne Welburn will also talk about how the pond has been saved and developed so far  At all times you must stay together and with the adults – do not wander off on your own
