The Right Motivation April 18

Think About It … What are some different ways you have served in church ministry over the years? What were some reasons you became involved in such ministries? Consider how your motives for serving affected the outcome.. for each of these reasons you served Today  we look at some of the reasons to be involved in ministry cooperating with God being involved with what He is doing in the world

Listen for how we are accountable for our actions. 2 Cor. 5:9-11a (NIV) So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. [10] For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. [11] Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men.

Because of Our Accountability According to Paul, what should be the believer’s goal? What future realities motivated Paul to please the Lord in all he said and did? What does Paul’s phrase “fear of the Lord” tell you about Paul’s and Timothy’s relationship with God? So what does Paul say was his motivation to try to persuade others to follow Christ?

Because of Our Accountability What is good about fearing God? How does fear of God get misapplied or misunderstood? What sort of accountability does Paul mention in this passage? How should the knowledge that we are accountable to the Lord affect our attitude toward ministry?

Listen for hints as to which way the “love of Christ” is going … to us or from us 2 Cor. 5:11b -15 (NLT) God knows we are sincere, and I hope you know this, too. [12] Are we trying to pat ourselves on the back again? No, we are giving you a reason to be proud of us, so you can answer those who brag about having a spectacular ministry rather than having a sincere heart before God. [13] If it seems that we are crazy, it is to bring glory to God. And if we are in our right minds, it is for your benefit.

Listen for hints as to which way the “love of Christ” is going … to us or from us [14] Whatever we do, it is because Christ's love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for everyone, we also believe that we have all died to the old life we used to live. [15] He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live to please themselves. Instead, they will live to please Christ, who died and was raised for them.

Because of Christ’s Love Why was Paul concerned about justifying his ministry to the Christians at Corinth? How were Paul’s opponents building themselves up at his expense? So, what motivated Paul?

Because of Christ’s Love How do Christians sometimes have the wrong motivation in ministries that give them attention and popularity? How is it possible for us to be motivated both by the fear of the Lord and Christ’s love? Christ’s motivating love for us can be realized both: – as crisis experience … at the time of salvation or maybe again at a rededication – as a daily experience … in your daily quiet time

Listen for what Paul has to say about being reconciled. 2 Cor. 5:16-21 (NIV) So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. [17] Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! [18] All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:

Listen for what Paul has to say about being reconciled. [19] that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. [20] We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. [21] God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Because of God’s Purpose How did Paul’s view of people change after conversion? What does it mean to be an ambassador for Christ? Before ChristAfter Conversion

Because of God’s Purpose Someone has said that believers are the only “Jesus” that some will ever see. What kinds of things in the life of a believer would keep others from seeing Jesus in their lives? What kinds of things do we need to have changed in our lives so that Jesus can be seen more clearly?

Application Examine your motives to be involved in ministry – As believers, our goal in life should be to please the Lord – We will all come before the judgment seat of Christ and give an account of our lives of service – This awareness of judgment should motivate our actions for God and for others

Application Christ’s love for us is revealed most fully in His death for us – He died that we might have eternal life, eternal union with God – He also died that we might die to our own selfish pursuits – Because of His love, you can share it with others

Application God offers reconciliation to sinners through faith in Christ – God calls all believers to be involved in this ministry of reconciliation – God calls us to be ambassadors for Christ – to represent Him and His love to a lost world – God’s purpose should motivate us to serve Him
