ALA Annual Conference 2012 LITA Game Making Discussion Group Scott Spicer University of Minnesota – Twin Cities

 Conceived by Ron Joslin, Systems Librian Macalester College for Orientation  Was serving as Practicum-Intern student working in IT Labs at DeWitt Wallace Library  Developed by Ron, Scott, Macalester Librarians (plot) and a cadre of tech. savvy students (programming).

 Macalester has large International student body – first year students  Familiarize with campus  Set up IT accounts  Base library instruction  Soften transition to college

 167 student signed up, about 1/3 finished  A drawing for prizes was offered to those who finished (including gift cards, memory sticks, iPods)

 Murder mystery – librarian found dead in library, body is gone  Students (Paul & Maria) lead search for who killed the librarian, where and when

 Collect cards by completing tasks  Share cards in Moodle community with other students  Solve who, what, where

 Built using Adobe Captivate  Included Flash, HTML, Google Maps, some video (in original version)

 About students completed the game  Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive (per Ron Joslin)  There was a follow up orientation related game called, Survivor Library, developed using Joomla
