ARCHAEOLOGIST By XXX XXXX STEM-period 6 Fall 2012

 AR. CHAE O. LO. GIST  an anthropologist who studies prehistoric people and their culture.

Job Description Excavations, commonly called 'digs', are only part of an archaeologist’s work, which also includes recording, analyzing and interpreting archaeological remains. Archaeologists are also involved in the preservation and conservation of artifacts, historic sites and monuments, curating, publicizing and displaying artifacts and carrying out research and educational work.

Job Qualifications  Ph.D. degrees are also usually required for teaching positions in universities and curator positions in museums. Master's degree programs typically take 1-2 years of post- baccalaureate coursework to complete, and doctoral degree programs may last an additional 2-3 years

Career salary  Archeologist jobs are generally high paying ones, with the average being $89,000. Regions paying highest for archeological jobs are Mississippi, District of Colombia, West Virginia, New York, Massachusetts and Virgin Islands, all paying above $100,000.

Top 3 Colleges  The university of Texas in Austin  Midland college  Texas A&M

3 Interesting Facts  Archaeologists always dig rectangular holes that are located on a grid.  Ancient garbage dumps are called middens, and can provide many clues about the daily life of ancient people.  Being an archaeologist is not quite as action-packed and thrilling as the movies may portray. Archaeologists may spend time on archaeological digs in the desert but they also spend considerable time in the library and online, doing research.
