Amber from the ancient neotropical rainforests of the Dominican Republic and Mexico often contains an abundance of plant-derived inclusions such as the leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers that belonged to the flora that inhabited those regions millions of years ago. A tiny mimosa blossom in Dominican amber

This delicate and graceful flowerbud still shows good detail in Dominican amber that dates from ca million years ago.

Amber is the fossilized resin of ancient trees and often, along with insects, plant material is trapped by dripping resin and thereby preserved intact over millenia by the gradual process of amberization. In the above photomicrograph, an ancient leaf from an unknown (at least by me) plant is seen embedded within a golden matrix of Dominican amber; the leaf is at least 20 million years old and may actually belong to the tree that produced the resin that trapped it. the substructure of ancient leaves in amber the substructure of ancient leaves in amber

Menagerie of insect whit spaider. Pieces of amber containing a menagerie of organisms provide snapshots of a cross section of the ancient forest community. This particular piece contains a small menagerie of 217 insects, spiders, and plants. The "spray" of tiny insects is Collembola, or springtails. The flowers and stems are from an acacia plant.

Frog Among the myriad organisms preserved in amber, only four small frogs have been discovered, all representing the genus Eleuthrodactylus, which is still found in the Caribbean.

Small Gecko Lizard Below is an x-ray of this specimen. The nearby leaf (not visible on the x-ray) was chewed, probably by a leaf- cutter bee. The lizard is so well-preserved that its fine toe bones are visible in the x-ray. It broke its back in two places -- perhaps while struggling to free itself from the resin.

This drawing depicts one of the most important insect fossils, the oldest known bee, Trigona prisca, which is encapsulated in amber from New Jersey. Although it dates from 65 to 80 million years ago, this specimen belongs to a surprisingly recent evolutionary group, raising questions about the corresponding evolution of flowering plants.

An example of how a fly and a spider can become ”frozen in the act”. 1. -The fly lands on the sticky tree resin. 2. -The fly is stuck as the spider approaches its prey. 3. -They are both surrounded in the flow and they are quickly encapsulated together.

The Amber Room before WWII Offered in 1716 as a gift from Prussian King Frederick William I to Czar Peter the Great, the walls of this chamber - - consisting of twenty-two panels -- were completely covered in a mosaic of more than 100,000 meticulously carved pieces of amber.

Among the elaborate carvings were intricate coats-of-arms, monograms, and inlaid decorations depicting landscapes and mythological scenes. In 1755 the chamber was installed in the Ekatarininsky Palace, where it remained for nearly two centuries. The panels were dismantled and hidden by the Nazis in 1942; they have never been recovered. The Amber Room was reconstructed from the Kaliningrad amber.
