Layout Introduction Working Principle Parts of milling machine Types of milling Diffrent milling cutters Application of milling machine Advantages & Disadvantages

Introduction Milling is the cutting operation that removes metal by feeding the work against a rotating, cutter having single or multiple cutting edges. Flat or curved surfaces of many shapes can be machined by milling with good finish and accuracy.

Working Principle The workpiece is holding on the worktable of the machine. The table movement controls the feed of workpiece against the rotating cutter. As the workpiece advances, the cutter teeth remove the metal from the surface of workpiece and the desired shape is produced.

Types of Milling

Diffrent Milling cutters

Types of Milling machine 1.Horizontal milling machine 2.Vertical milling machine

Application of milling machine To cutting gears. To make keyways. To Planing, drilling drilling operations.

Force Analysis during plane milling

Advantage & Disadvantages Good precision & accuracy upto 0.025mm. It can perform vast of operations from simple(slot & keyways, planning, drilling) to complex (contouring, diesinking). Can also be controlled digitally automated by CNC. Not good at cutting radial cuts Mills are very expensive to purchase & maintain Used lot of electricity. Milling takes skill to use accurately.
