Preamble To understand how you hear, know that sounds are visible vibrations that travel through the air. When someone speaks, tree leaves rustle, a telephone rings or anything else creates a 'sound', vibrations are sent through the air in all directions. We know them as sound waves. Almost all sound waves are unique. That's why each person/thing sounds different - and why one person or thing doesn't always sound the same. Some sound waves might be high pitched or low pitched, loud or soft. When our ears capture sound waves, they convert them into messages our brains understand. How well they are captured - and how clearly they are sent to our brains - depends on how well our ears work. This last sentence is relevant to the questions posed 2 slides earlier. Middle Ear - the middle ear transfers sound waves in the air into mechanical pressure waves that are then transferred to the fluids of the inner ear. How Natural Hearing Works (How your ear works normally) a. Sounds enter the ear canal b. Sound waves move through the ear canal and strike the eardrum. c. The ear drum and bones of hearing vibrate d. These second waves cause the eardrum, and the three bones (ossicles) within the ear, to vibrate. e. Fluid moves through the inner ear f. The vibrations move through the fluid in the spiral shaped inner ear - known as the cochlea - and cause the tiny hair cells in the cochlea to move. The hair cells detect the movement and change it into the chemical signals for the hearing nerve. g. Hearing nerves communicate to the brain h. The hearing nerve then sends the information to the brain with electrical impulses, where they are interpreted as sounds. You experience hearing difficulties when the above does not happen normally. No. 1: SENSORINEURAL LOSS Caused by damage to inner ear or nerve pathway to the brain. These types of losses are usually permanent and uncorrectable medically or surgically. a. Age-Related. Known as presbycusis or nerve damage. Very gradual, even unnoticeable, it usually occurs in the higher frequency range vital to understanding speech. b. Noise Damage. Exposure to military and sport firearms, industrial and home machinery, musical concerts. Can result from single incident or prolonged exposure. c. Disease/Trauma. Meniiere's Disease (may also be accompanied by vertigo, nausea, ringing), tumors, birth injury, skull fractures, & viral infections. No. 2: CONDUCTIVE LOSS Conditions that interfere with the condition of sound through the outer, middle or inner ear. Some may be treatable medically or surgically. a. Ear Infections. Temporary hearing impairment can result from cold – or allergy - related fluid build-up in the ear and/or eustachian tubes. b. Disease/Trauma. Ailments such as otosclerosis, which affects movement of middle ear bones, tumors, or outer ear or eardrum injuries, like rapid air pressure changes. c. Earwax or Objects. Hearing loss may simply be caused by an accumulation/blockage of earwax, or foreign objects. Simply have it examined, so whatever is in there can be removed.
