Skeletal System Anatomy By: Greg Daubs

Functions of Skeletal System Provides support and framework for body Protects delicate internal organs Also provides attachment sites for organs Bones serve as mineral storage for Calcium and phosphorus Bones are also the site of red blood cell formation in their marrow

Divisions of the Skeleton Axial skeleton -Blue bones Skull Sternum Ribs Vertebral column Appendicular Skeleton -Pink bones Upper Extremities Lower Extremities Shoulder Girdle Pelvic Girdle

Different Types of Bones Long Bones Longer than they are wide and work as levers. Ex. Humerus, Tibia, Femur Short Bones Are cube shaped and have a thin layer of compact bone, with inner spongy bone Ex. Bones of the wrists and ankles Flat Bones Are thin and usually curved. Provide protection for organs. Ex. Most of the bones of the skull, ribs, sternum Irregular Bones Do not fit in any other category. Shape usually has to do with specific function of the bone. Ex. Vertabrae, some facial bones Sesamoid Bones Are bones that are embedded in tendons Ex. Patella (knee cap)

Bone Composition Bone is made up of Compact bone and Spongy bone. Compact bone is the hard exterior that is composed of repeating osteons Spongy bone does not have osteons, but has trabeculae which are basically little beams in the bone. Also spongy bone cotains red marrow which gives nutrients to the cells in the bone

Compact Bone

Spongy Bone

Review Quiz What part of the Skeleton is the Skull apart of? Name two functions of the skeletal System Give an example of a flat bone What is the hard part of a bone? Name one example of an irregular Bone? What is Spongy bone made up of? What is the definition of a short bone? What part of the skeleton is the Humerus apart of?
