OVERVIEW THE FRUIT OF THE GOSPEL A MODEL PRAYER

BACKGROUND BOOK OF COLOSSIANS

COL 4:18 I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.

COL 1:7 You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf,

ACT 19:10 This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.

COL 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

COL 2:9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form,

COL 2:10 and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.

COL 3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

THE FRUIT OF THE GOSPEL I THANK GOD FOR THE FRUIT OF GOSPEL IN MY LIFE AND THE PRIVILEGE OF SHARING THIS MESSAGE WITH OTHERS

A MODEL PRAYER COL 1:9-14

COL 1:9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

COL 1:10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,

COL 1:11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully

QUOTE Left to ourselves, we are never more selfish than when we pray. With God as the Great Sympathizer, the Great Giver, the Great Promiser, we go to our knees and indulge every impulse for gratification. Eugene Peterson, Answering God: The Psalms as Tools for Prayer, p. 91

WILL OF GOD COL 1:9

COL 1:9a For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will...

HEB 10:7 Then I said, 'Here I am--it is written about me in the scroll-- I have come to do your will, O God.'"

JOH 4:34 "My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.

JOH 6:38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.

LUK 22:42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."

COL 1:9b... through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

COL 2:23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self- imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

MAT 5:44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

WALK WITH GOD COL 1:10a

And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way:...

COL 1:10a (NASB) so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord,...

COL 1:10b... and may please him in every way:...

MAR 1:11 And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."

2 COR 5:9 Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.

WORK FOR GOD COL 1:10c- 11a

COL 1:10c... bearing fruit in every good work,...

COL 1:10d... growing in the knowledge of God,

COL 1:11a being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience,...

ROM 6:4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

WORSHIP OF GOD COL 1:11b- 13

COL 1:11b and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.

COL 1:13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,

COL 1:14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

MAT 8:12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

MAT 8:12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

MAT 22:13 "Then the king told the attendants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

MAT 25:30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

MAT 27:45 From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.

MAT 27:46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"-- which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

COL 1:12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.

A MODEL PRAYER WILL OF GOD WALK WITH GOD WORK FOR GOD WORSHIP OF GOD

A MODEL PRAYER I PRAY FOR GROWTH IN YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND OBEDIENCE OF GOD’S WILL SO THAT YOU MAY FAITHFULLY WORK WITH HIS POWER AND JOYFULLY WORSHIP HIM FOR SAVING YOU

HE GIVETH MORE GRACE He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater; He sendeth more strength when the labors in- crease. To added affliction He addeth His mercy; To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.

HE GIVETH MORE GRACE CHORUS His love has no limit; His grace has no measure. His power has no boundary known unto men. For out of His infinite riches in Jesus, He giveth, and giveth, and giveth a-gain!

HE GIVETH MORE GRACE When we have exhausted our store of endurance, When our strength has failed ere the day is half done, When we reach the end of our hoarded resources; Our Father's full giving is only begun.

HE GIVETH MORE GRACE CHORUS His love has no limit; His grace has no measure. His power has no boundary known unto men. For out of His infinite riches in Jesus, He giveth, and giveth, and giveth a-gain!
