{ Equipment Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award

 What do you want from the tramp?  Long-term goals?  Safe or High risk?  Experience?  Skills? Goals

 What equipment is necessary? Don’t go overboard  Should suit toughest conditions you anticipate  Think long-term  Minimise – don’t compromise  You must be able to carry it  Borrow or hire?  Watch for sales at camping shops Equipment

 Internal frame: narrow, body-hugging, balanced, warmer, but may be harder to pack  External frame: easier to pack, cooler, good for easier trails  Packs for women: straps and lengths designed specially  Travel packs: larger and better access, hide harness when on public transport. Not ideal for difficult tramps.  Specialise tramping packs (ask for advice in a reputable camping shop): 65-75L best for 2-7 day tramping, usually. Equipment - packs

 Match the rating to the coldest temperatures you anticipate  Down is lighter and compresses well, but dries slowly  Mummy style bags give best insulation  Ripstop material will prevent tearing  Waterproof sleeping bags are expensive, and only necessary if you are sleeping outside  Sleeping bag liners help keep your bag clean and warm and can be used on their own in warmer weather  Equipment – sleeping bags

 Comfort and insulation  Closed foam  Self-inflating  Air mattress Sleeping mats

 Consider  weight, size, construction, material  will it protect against the elements, especially wind and rain?  how many doors and openings?  is there vestibule space for packs?  do you have to carry the tent with you?  Discuss your needs with the staff at the camping shops – they will be able to advise you on the most suitable tents Equipment - tents

 Cleaning and maintaining gear will make it last longer and better  Clean tents, packs and mats with natural, non-detergent soap; rinse and dry well out of sunlight  Sleeping bags: wash according to manufacturer’s instructions (hand-wash with a natural soap) and dry thoroughly; consider using a liner.  Boots: rinse off mud in cold water using a nylon brush. Treat with wax proofing. Wear before tramping to soften again. Looking after gear
