Respect – Find Out What It Means October 28

Think About It … What were you taught as a youngster about how to show respect? How does it make you feel when someone shows you disrespect? Respect is a big deal … it matters between people Today we look at ways to show respect

Listen for what Jesus has to say about taking an oath. Matthew 5:33-37 (NIV) "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' [34] But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; [35] or by the earth,

Listen for what Jesus has to say about taking an oath. for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. [36] And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. [37] Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

Honesty Is the Best Policy What does Jesus say from the Old Testament’s rules about taking an oath? We have a phrase, “I’ll swear on a stack of Bibles.” What other things do folks swear on/by/to? What oaths does Jesus comment about in this passage? What were people swearing on?

Honesty Is the Best Policy People had this idea that if they swore by something other than God, it didn’t count like kids do when they cross their fingers and make some claim or promise According to Jesus, why were these not really a dodge, not a way to not hold yourself to the oath?

Honesty Is the Best Policy In what kinds of situations do people typically make claims with “I swear to God” or “I swear on my mother’s grave” ? When they do this why does it make us actually more suspicious of them? What does it imply when people don’t take you at your word?

Honesty Is the Best Policy What are some practical ways we can practice honesty so we will be taken at our word? How does practicing straightforward honesty show respect for others and for God?

Listen for Jesus’ teachings on retaliation. Matthew 5:38-42 (NIV) "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' [39] But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. [40] And if someone wants to sue you and

Listen for Jesus’ teachings on retaliation. take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. [41] If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. [42] Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

Beyond the Call of Duty The Old Testament taught the “eye for eye, and tooth for tooth” principle of retaliation. At that time it was more limiting that what was practiced … “hit ‘em back harder” . Why would that type of practice be dangerous? What kinds of things make you want to “hit ‘em back harder?”

Beyond the Call of Duty What does Jesus now say? What is accomplished by a believer who refuses to retaliate? In what kinds of situations might we have the opportunity to “go the extra mile?” How does practicing this kind of attitude or action demonstrate “agape” love?

Love Your Enemies Why is it easier to love some people more than others? Listen for reasons why we should love our enemies (and maybe the weird people).

Listen for reasons why we should love our enemies. Matthew 5:43-48 (NIV) "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' [44] But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, [45] that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the

Listen for reasons why we should love our enemies. unrighteous. [46] If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? [47] And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? [48] Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Love Your Enemies What reasons does Jesus give here for loving our enemies? If our holy God is able to exhibit grace and mercy to everyone, why is it difficult for us to be like Him? How does choosing to love only those who love you show disrespect for God and for others?

Love Your Enemies What would have to happen in your heart in order for you to be able to pray for an enemy? Why would praying for an enemy change things?

Application Consider what you can do this week to show respect to someone who you have not previously respected Practice honesty in your dealings with others, with God, even with yourself Anyone can love their friends … allow God’s love to flow through you to love all people
