Cooling System Service CS6 NATEF Task A.1 D.7 By Vance Bloom

O BJECTIVE Student will inspect, test and flush cooling system

M ATERIALS N EEDED 1. Eye protection 2. Coolant 3. Hand Tools & Coolant Tester 4. Funnel 5. Hoist or Jack & Safety Stands 5. Vehicle (See Instructor)

P ROCEDURE WEAR EYE PROTECTION! With engine cool ! Remove radiator cap. Test coolant. Note condition on skill sheet. Inspect radiator cap. Note appearance. Loosen drain plug & drain cooling system. Tighten drain plug. Fill cooling system with water. Run engine till thermostat opens. Drain cooling system. Note appearance of fluid drained. Refill and repeat until clean water comes out of engine. Tighten drain plug. With 100% coolant, add 1/2 volume of cooling system capacity. Fill the balance of system with water. Run engine until warm and top off with 50/50 mix of coolant & water. Do not forget to clean and refill overflow reservoir with 50/50 coolant mix. Check system for leaks.

Step 1 WEAR EYE PROTECTION!

Step 2 With engine cool ! Remove radiator cap Inspect radiator cap Note appearance

Step 3 Test coolant Note condition on skill sheet

Step 4 Loosen drain plug & drain cooling system into clean pan or bucket

Step 5 Tighten drain plug. Fill cooling system with water Run engine till thermostat opens Drain cooling system. (Note appearance of fluid drained) Refill with water and repeat until clean water comes out of engine

Step 6 Look up cooling system capacity in one of the following: Repair manual Mitchell-On-Demand All-Data Fast Spec Vehicle Owner’s Manual

Step 7 With 100% coolant, add 1/2 volume of cooling system capacity. –Example if capacity is 10quarts –add 5 quarts coolant Fill the balance of system with water. Run engine until warm and top off with 50/50 mix of coolant & water

Step 8 Do not forget to clean and refill overflow reservoir with 50/50 coolant mix Check system for leaks
