 Audacity is a free tool that records and edits sounds  If you need to download Audacity, go to and select Download Audacity instead of Audacity , because the later edition is still a “work in progress”.

 Import existing music (you own legally, i.e. from Amazon.com downloads) into Audacity so you can edit it  Change the pitch (highness or lowness of sound)  Change the tempo (speed of the steady beat) without changing the pitch  Cut away unwanted sections of music or sound  Record your own sounds for future editing  Export what you created as a WAV file or as an MP3

 Import Audio  Click on Project, and then import audio  Select music you have already downloaded on your computer, or ripped from a CD  Press play to preview  To change the pitch:  Click on Edit, and then select  all  Click on Effects, and then change pitch  Choose the interval (the distance from the original pitch) that you want to change up or down to by clicking on the new key

 Undo option  Click on Edit, and then undo (or, click on the undo command from the middle of the toolbar)  To change the tempo:  Click on Edit, and then select  all  Click on Effects, and then change tempo with one of the following options: Move the selection arrow + or – Enter the specific percent change Enter the beats per minute Enter the exact time that you want the audio to be stretched or condensed to

 To cut parts out:  Click-drag one part of the spectrogram (digital audio display) at a time that you want to remove  Click on the Edit menu and select cut, or click on the cut command (scissors) from the middle of the toolbar  To record live audio:  Press the red record command only (not at the same time as play)  Press stop when done recording

 Import audio from your media player or other digital source, and edit it by changing the pitch or the tempo OR  Record your own voice (singing would be great, but not necessary), and change the pitch higher or lower OR  Import a song and cut the beginning or end of the song out

 Once your Audacity project is saved as a WAV file, you can send it to me in an for feedback  Send your audio file as an attachment to as a demonstration of your new skill  You can forward any of your questions to this , or you can use the Audacity wiki as a resource: _Wiki_Home_Page _Wiki_Home_Page

 Burn your audio onto a CD  make sure it is a CD-R or CD-RW  Play it from your Media Player (Windows)  Continue to edit it in Audacity  Save it on your computer’s hard drive or on a memory stick  Send audio/verbal feedback on a student’s assignment to their

 When you want to download your newly created audio to another device, you need to save your Audacity file as an MP3  Audacity itself cannot encode audio as an MP3, so you need to download Lame MP3 Encoder  Go to to downloadhttp://lame.buanzo.com.ar  Once you have it, you will have a file called lame_enc.dll, LameLib or libmp3lame.dylib  The first time you want to export an MP3 file, Audacity will ask you for the location of this file, so remember where you saved it
