1/14/11 -SP 11 Digital Capstones Copyright Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU2 Spring ECE DeGroat  A couple of projects descriptions are given  A wireless MP3 transmission system  The NAECON Grand Challenge

1/14/11 -SP 11 Digital Capstones Copyright Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU3 MP3 transmission system  A person wants to place a speaker in a location and does not want to run wires from the amplifier to the speaker. What does he do?  There are a few systems that support wireless speakers designed for that system.  What do you do if you have a typical stereo receiver with banana speaker jacks? Use wire!! 

MP3 transmission system  The objective of this project is to take an audio signal from an audio output and transmit it wirelessly to a unit that sends the signal to an output which may be a speaker.  For the prototype version the input signal is an audio signal between 500Hz and 3KHz. For the final version one would want 20-22,000 Hz.  This is best supported by converting the signal to a digital signal, MP3 encoding.  The speaker could be up to 25 feet away for the prototype. 1/14/11 -SP 11 Digital Capstones Copyright Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU4

NAECON Grand Challenge  The NAECON Grand Challenge Problem for 2011 is “THz Imaging Using Novel Smart Collection Fusion Algorithms”.  Starting from raw data sets (several different THz frequency scans of the same object), competitors will investigate advanced fusion algorithms or novel plane array devices, with the goal of extracting coherent hyperspectral images. 1/14/11 -SP 11 Digital Capstones Copyright Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU5

NAECON G. C.  Competitors may use their own data sets, or obtain a data set from the conference organizers. DARPA and AFOSR support THz imaging technology, so competitors may be able to leverage their research into funded opportunities.  Largely a software orientated project.  Ref: 1/14/11 -SP 11 Digital Capstones Copyright Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU6

Other digital project of your choice.  In my section of 682, your group may make a proposal for a project of your group’s own preference.  One possible idea here is an interface for a MP3 player that is voice controlled so that a driver can hands-free and with no visual distraction control the player. RE: Dragon Naturally Speaking – i.e. natural language processing  It will be evaluated before you will be able to proceed on it. 1/14/11 -SP 11 Digital Capstones Copyright Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU7

Format for this ECE 682  First week is to reorganize into to appropriate teams, choose project, assign team roles, and get started.  Class scheduled time is a good time for team meetings to to work as a team.  Mid-project review – written status report and oral presentation.  Final project review – written final report and oral presentation.  Project must be functional and prototype must also be field-able. (Size does not have to match that of a production product.) 1/14/11 -SP 11 Digital Capstones Copyright Joanne DeGroat, ECE, OSU8
