Lord Don’t you care? 1/30/10

Mark 4:35-41 35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side." 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?" 39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!" And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?" 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, "Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!" Mark 4:35-41 (NKJV)

Let’s break this down

Verse 37 Keep in mind, James, John, Peter, and Andrew were all fishermen – Same stuff, different day A great tempest is the equivalent of a squall, a white out, or blizzard. It is unforeseen, is upon you quickly The boat was already taking on water

Verse 38 Jesus was curled up with a pillow in the rear of the boat Even amidst the storm, He remained at rest His response to a “catastrophic” issue was not up to the fishermen’s expectation They woke Him, (not trusted, not believed in, not abided in) And they accused Him “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing????”

Isn’t that our nature? Jesus is completely calm, has never lost control of the situation, and is able to rest Because He doesn’t show the same urgency as we do, we assume He doesn’t care Could we even dare to accuse Him that He does not care about our current situation… Or could it be He is at peace with our current situation

Verse 39 He wasn’t slow to act, or quick to act. Our timing is often much quicker than His He dealt with the immediate situation first. He didn’t speculate about the origin of the storm He didn’t give reasons why the storm occurred He brought peace to the situation. - That is your job too! Then He dealt with the heart issues

Verse 40 Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith. Oligopistos – little, immature, undeveloped faith Not an insult, but an acknowledgement that their faith must grow How do we increase our faith? Luke 17:5 (a message from a few months ago)

The irony of faith New believers can have more faith than the seasoned believer We ask things not in His will, and then feel like He didn’t reward our faith or answer a prayer As long as you pray God’s will, you will never be disappointed. How do you know God’s will? Get in your Word! Our responsibility during a storm is simple – Look, Listen, and Rest

What was the purpose of the tempest? Even if your boat is sinking Even if your job is in jeopardy Even if your marriage isn’t what you’d like it to be Even if your children aren’t growing up the way you’d like them to In all things, He can calm your storm.
