1. How do learning targets benefit students, teachers, and parents? 2. How do teachers create learning targets and inspire students to self-assess? HOTS Questions

1. I can understand the benefits of learning targets in order to facilitate student self- assessment. 2. I can create learning targets that are clear to students. Learning Targets

There is a distinction between learning targets and learning activities. Characteristics of Learning Targets… What kids need to know, understand, and be able to in order to show mastery of standards. Characteristics of Learning Activities…The processes; the doing. Deliberate use of learning targets help us to focus on what students are learning rather than what they are doing. So what does the research say… Is your classroom by learning targets or learning activities?

Performance Standard 1: Professional Knowledge The teacher demonstrates an understanding of the curriculum, subject content, pedagogical knowledge, and the needs of students by providing relevant learning experiences. Performance Standard 6: Assessment Uses The teacher systematically gathers, analyzes, and uses relevant data to measure student progress, to inform instructional content and delivery methods, and to provide timely and constructive feedback to both students and parents. Performance Standard 8: Academically Challenging Environment The teacher creates a student-centered, academic environment in which teaching and learning occur at high levels and students are self-directed learners. Can learning targets increase my TKES outcomes?

How to create a learning target… In a nut shell! Let’s break it down!

Kids Explain Learning Targets Learning targets are for kids!

1. Knowledge- facts and concepts we want students to know 2. Reasoning – use what they know, reason or solve problems 3. Skills- use knowledge and reasoning to act skillfully 4. Products- use knowledge, reasoning, and skills to create a concrete product To build clear learning targets we need to understand that there are actually five kinds of learning targets.

Our state assessments utilize Webb’s Depth of Knowledge to code the standard and assessment items to ensure the highest level of assessment.Webb’s Depth of Knowledge How does this work with assessment?

1. Deconstruct the standard 2. Identify the ultimate learning target type. (BTW that is what you use to create your assessment.) 3. Brainstorm and list the underpinnings of the standard. (BTW those are your lessons.) The Process

4. Define any academic language of the standard. 5. Review the learning before and after the grade level standard. 6. Build your self-assessment rubric. The Process

Let’s share! Let’s do one together: RI Analyze how the author unfolds an analysis or series of ideas or events, including the order in which the points are made, how they are introduced and developed, and the connections that are drawn between them.

1.With a partner, select one of your grade level reading standards Standards Standards 2. Complete the Deconstruction Template.Deconstruction Template Let’s practice.

Let’s share! Now do another one alone!!!!!

Let’s take it to a rubric! Student-Friendly Learning Targets Instructional TieringHow might you assess? Going beyond the standard These targets are for students who have already mastered the standard or learning goal and are ready for enrichment. You can “go beyond” with content, levels of cognitive demand, or a combination of both. Mastering the standard These targets are the minimum level all students need to master. Mastering these targets means that the student is “working on grade level.” Laying the base (Foundation Learning) These targets are the learning targets that students must know and be able to do in order to learn the mastery targets.
