More than one billion people live in poverty – on an income of less than one dollar (70 pence) a day 5

9 million children under the age of five die of preventable diseases – every year 6

An estimated 100 million children live on the streets around the world 7

An estimated 1.2 million boys and girls are trafficked each year into exploitative work 8

Hundreds of thousands of children are fighting in wars around the world 9

Every 15 seconds a child is orphaned by AIDS. 10

Many widows and grandmothers are unable to care for their children 11
