“Second Timothy” Remembering Timothy “Stir Up…” “Share…” 2 Timothy 1:3-12 Workbook by Reg Ginn Pages 8-15 Remembering Timothy “Stir Up…” “Share…” 2 Timothy 1:3-12 Workbook by Reg Ginn Pages 8-15 Lesson 2

A Quick Review of 2 Timothy 1:1, 2 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God His commission was to take the gospel to the Gentiles and preach the promise of life in Jesus Christ Timothy was Paul’s beloved son He offered Timothy the grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord

Today’s Lesson 2 Timothy 1:1, 2 Paul was thankful to God for all the memories of Timothy He gives Timothy many exhortations but today we will focus on two: 1.To stir up the gift of God which is in you, and 2.To not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner

Remembering Timothy 2 Timothy 1:3-5 “Without ceasing I remember you…” (v.3-5) –In my prayers night and day –Greatly desiring to see you –Being mindful of your tears –It caused Paul to be filled with joy –The genuine faith that is in you The genuine faith was first in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice

Paul said he thanked God for his remembrance of Timothy (v.3) He had served God with a pure conscience –His forefathers had done likewise –Paul had always done what he thought was right before God Paul is an example that a conscience in religion can only be right when God’s truth has been implanted Remembering Timothy 2 Timothy 1:3

“Stir Up…” 2 Timothy 1:6, 7 “Stir up the gift of God…” (v.6) –“Stir up” means to “to kindle afresh, to keep in full flame, as a fire” –There were many gifts of God (1Cor. 12:28-30) –“To lay on the hands” was the imparting a blessing, or in setting apart to any office –Timothy’s “gift” was “in” him by the “laying on” of Paul’s hands This gift was of power, of love, and a sound mind and not a spirit of fear (v.7) It was probably a Spirit-controlled power to preach the gospel

“Share…” 2 Timothy 1:8-12 “Share with me in the sufferings for the gospel…” (v.8) –This invitation would require that: He not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, Nor of Paul, a prisoner, for standing for truth –Paul was suffering grievously in his captivity –If Timothy accepted the invitation, he would be subjected to the same treatment as Paul –If he declined, it would show he had been overcome with shame and fear –The need must have been great for Paul to call Timothy, his son in the faith, into such danger

“Share…” 2 Timothy 1:8-12 “…according to the power of God…” (v.8) –Who has saved us –Who has called us with a holy calling Not according to our works, But according to His own purpose and grace They were willing to be used as tools in executing His plan to save the lost –God’s purpose and grace was set in motion “before time began” –But, God’s plan has now been revealed and fulfilled by the appearing of Christ

“Share…” 2 Timothy 1:8-12 “… by the appearing of Christ …” (v.10) –He abolished death –He brought life and immortality to light through the gospel –Paul was now preaching this gospel to the Gentiles as well as the Jews so both could share in the gospel’s precious promises

“Share…” 2 Timothy 1:8-12 “For this reason…” (v.12) –Paul was appointed a preacher, apostle, and teacher –Paul suffered many things –But, he was not ashamed of the gospel “For I know whom I have believed…” –Paul was persuaded that God would keep what he had committed until that day –He knew that preaching of the gospel would come at a price, but it was worth it –He knew that God’s is able to “keep” him for his commitment to Him until that day
