User Producer Dialogue in Gender Statistics: Bangladesh Experience By A Y M Ekramul Hoque Director General Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and Md. Shamsul Alam Project Director Monitoring the Situation of Children and Women, BBS

Introduction  User Producer dialogue is necessary to generate gender Statistics that can address the requirement of the data by the users  User Producer interaction is necessary to incorporate indicators related to women in national censuses and surveys.

Introduction (cont.)  Restructuring and redesigning of the survey questionnaire to collect data on latest gender issues  Tabulate data to generate gender statistics in light of user need  Generate Gender Statistics in light of MDG and PRS monitoring

Bangladesh experience on User Producer Group  No permanent group  Formed on occasional basis  Established to compile data on gender statistics from secondary sources  Committee was formed under the auspices of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs  Committee was formed twice one in 1997 and another in 2002

Activities of the User Producer Group The activities of the user producer group were as follows:  To identify the indicators to be included in the publication of gender statistics  To prepare the tabulation plan for the additional tables to be generated from the existing data set  To prepare the manuscript of the report

 During the preparation of the report on gender statistics the Committee met once in a month  After the preparation of the report the activities of the Committee discontinued Meetings of the User Producer Group

Strategies Have been most successful in fostering dialogue between User and Producer of Statistics  Activity or Project oriented dialogue  Some Resources for the Members for their contribution

Key Challenges in fostering User Producer dialogue  Institutionalization of the Committee with the regular activities of the NSO  Incentives to the Members for their Contribution  A permanent TOR for the Committee
