Order of operations Introduction Can you go to your classes whenever you want or do you have to follow the order of the schedule you were assigned? Will your locker open if you use the three numbers in any order? Does it matter if you turn the lock to the left or to the right first? Does 2 + 5 x 3 equal 21 or 17? You will be using this WebQuest to find out the order of operations that must be followed when evaluating mathematical expressions so that everyone gets the same answer.

Question #1 Please put you r name and your partner’s on you answer sheet. 1) list four operations. X = + -

Question #2 2)What is the order of operations ? B____________ E____________ D____________ M___________ A____________ S_____________ http://math.about.com/od/glossaryofterms/g/What-Is-Bedmas.htm

Question #3 Listen to the song. Use head phones or low volume. Does it help you remember BEDMAS ? Answer on your sheet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGIXxYAK00o

Question #4 4) other countries call BEDMAS by different names. Use this link to find out what they are. Answer on your sheet. http://www.algebra.com/algebra/homework/Distributive-associative-commutative-properties/Distributive-associative-commutative-properties.faq.question.626273.html BEDMAS by many names

Question #5 Mnemonics are often used to help students remember the rules, but the rules taught by the use of acronyms can be misleading. In the United States the acronym PEMDAS is common. It stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. PEMDAS is often expanded to "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" with the first letter of each word creating the acronym PEMDAS. Canada uses BEDMAS. It stands for Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction What Mnemonic can you come up to help you remember BEDMAS ?

Question #6 Solve this question. Then check the video to see if you are correct. 16 + 3 X4 -2X3 +3 Watch the video below ( headphones or low volume) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyGG4caBG4k

Question #7 Take the quiz below. Record your score on the answer sheet. You can take it as a team or each play separately. http://www.quia.com/quiz/307941.html?AP_rand=1950621384

Question #8 Play the matching game. Record your experience by answering the questions on your answer sheet. http://www.quia.com/mc/281615.html
