El Imperfecto What is it and when do you use it?

Talking about events that took place in the past

Preterite To narrate past events in which there is a definite beginning and ending. Looks at isolated events.

Una vez me rompí el brazo jugando al sófbol.

Me casé en el año 1978.

How is it different from the preterite?

The imperfect is used to narrate events in the past but with a key difference: Nonspecific or Nonspecific or Indefinite time Indefinite time

The Imperfect (Uses): Habitual or repeated events Background information Description/characteristics

Example Mi historia personal: Cuando yo era una niña, vivía en una casita en una colina. Mi casa estaba en Bridgewater, Mass. Yo era quieta y me gustaba jugar en el árbol detrás de mi casa.

When would you want to use the imperfect?

La historia de Ud. What were you like (physically or in terms of personality)? What did you do for activities (fun or otherwise)? Who were your friends? Where did you live? Etc.

-ía -ías -ía -íamos -íais -ían

Irregular verbs: Imperfect Ir = to go iba íbamos ibas ibais iba iban Ser = to be era éramos eras erais era eran Ver = to see veía veíamos veías veíais veía veían

Additional Use: IR was (or were) going to + infinitive Yo iba a ayudar. I was going to help.
