AFCEA Educational Foundation STEM Teachers for America’s Future Scholarships AFCEA Chapter Matching Program

What is it? A $5,000 scholarship for: – Undergraduates (sophomores, juniors, seniors) – Graduate students – Credential/licensure students – Majoring in STEM/Secondary Education and – Planning to teach, or currently teaching, a STEM subject in a U.S. middle or high school

Who administers it? AFCEA Educational Foundation administers the online application program and tracks recipients. Foundation provides completed application packages online to individual Chapters based on the ZIP codes covered by the respective Chapter. Individual Chapters evaluate applicants via the Foundation’s online judging program using the same criteria as the national scholarship process – program available via AFCEA’s portal. Based on Chapter judges’ scores, (at least) two scholarships are awarded.

Chapter match The Chapter commits to one (or more) $5,000 scholarship. The Foundation will match with the same number of scholarships. (40 matching scholarships available in FY14.) – For example, if Huntsville Chapter agrees to fund one $5,000 scholarship, the Foundation will match with a second $5,000 scholarship, resulting in two scholarship winners in the Huntsville community.

What is Chapter’s financial commitment? $5,000 for STEM Teacher Scholarship. $1,000 STEM Teaching Tool grant/year for the next 3 years after the student graduates and begins teaching, or if a current teacher, once the degree is earned. Total commitment of $8,000 per scholarship. Foundation will match with the same amount for the second scholarship plus 3 STEM Teaching Tool grants.

Marketing Foundation provides national Press Release for use in local newspapers. Foundation contacts relevant teacher associations with information about scholarship. Foundation contacts colleges and universities nationwide with information about scholarship. Chapter follows up with local schools. Chapter contacts local middle & high schools to identify STEM teachers pursuing Master’s degrees or credential/licensures. Chapter contacts local associations, i.e. U-Teach programs, with information about scholarship.

Timeline Scholarships are awarded annually, non- renewable, but candidates can reapply if still eligible. In FY13, there were 6 repeat winners. Application deadline: April 1 Review & Selection: During April Recognize recipients & present checks: May/June in time for Chapter’s Spring Awards event whenever possible.
