Proper Planting of an Avocado Tree Gary Bender Farm Advisor U.C. Cooperative Extension

Dig the hole the same depth as the root ball, measure with a shovel handle

Set the tree in the hole, supporting the bottom of the root ball with the hand

Slit the plastic liner with a knife, make a shallow cut

Partially fill the hole with soil, do not use mulch or manures

Don’t forget to remove the plastic liner!

Backfill most of the hole and tamp to remove air pockets

The backfill is finished with a final tamping with your feet

In root rot soil, gypsum is added to the surface at lbs per tree

The planting is finished with a top-dressing of wood chips or bark
