Manipulated vs. Responding What is a manipulated variable? The manipulated variable is what you manipulate/change/control. What is a responding variable? The responding variable depends on/responds to the manipulated variable. Hypothesis: “If the temperature increases, crickets will chirp more frequently.” What is the manipulated variable? = increased temperature What is the responding variable? = chirping frequency

Practice: What is the effect of the height a ball is dropped on the height it bounces up? What are we going to manipulate/change? The height the ball is dropped. What are we going to observe in response to the differing heights the ball is dropped? The height the ball bounces up. So the manipulated variable is? The responding variable is?
