Little cloud – big difference Matt Healy – Chairman, OzHub April 2012

Who is OzHub? ozhub.com.au A new industry coalition to build Australian consumer and business confidence in cloud computing. It was launched in October 2011 by the Minister for Innovation. OzHub’s aims are to: position Australia as a national and regional cloud hosting centre provide data security for those organisations compelled, or preferring, to host their data in Australia provide cloud hosting services within Australia’s privacy legal framework define regulations and protocols for hosting cloud services in Australia

Introduction Cloud development – profound and exciting shift Good for consumers, business efficiency and national welfare Increase in productivity, energy efficient, competitive

Risk - Where is the data held? A heavy focus on the excitement of a new product tends to mean the risks are potentially underplayed. Conducted research to investigate consumer attitudes and awareness in March.

Social networking sites and online services are the most common cloud computing services in which people’s personal information is being stored Source: Omnibus report: Attitudes to cloud computing, AusPoll, March 2012

But not many know where their data is stored Source: Omnibus report: Attitudes to cloud computing, AusPoll, March 2012 The majority of internet-based service users would be concerned if their personal data was being stored in a country other than Australia

Around three quarters of Australians would prefer for their personal data to be stored in Australia Source: Omnibus report: Attitudes to cloud computing, AusPoll, March 2012

Respondents overwhelmingly believe the Government should take action to ensure consumers are aware, and consent, to their personal data being stored overseas

Strong desire for Government to step in and provide protections. OzHub is not arguing that we should close our borders to data flows. But industry needs to be more open about the choices we are making on behalf of our customers and giving back to them some of the power over their private information.

What’s next? Act now to educate and inform vs Undoing crisis of confidence later
