Historical Context Due to the Wall Street Crash in 1929 millions of people lost their jobs and travelled to ‘Golden’ California in search of employment. There was no dole to fall back on so food was short and the unemployed in cities couldn’t pay their rent. Some people ended up living in settlements made of corrugated iron. Due to the desperation for food , work and money friendship was rare – it was a case of every man for himself. Men travelled from ranch to ranch in search of employment and men never stayed in one place long enough to make friends. Woman were low on the hierarchy. They were traditional woman with few right. They were expected to cook, clean and mother children. Woman who settled as housewives had the only job that was safe during the Great Depression. Men had to prove themselves by being the main earner . Many men felt they had failed when they couldn’t provide for their families.

Black people were discriminated and were not allowed to mix with white people. White male employment was first priority to many so black people had it even harder to find work. The ‘American Dream’ gave men hope. However, with lack of jobs and money , the dream had become a nightmare . What was once the land of opportunity was now the land of desperation.
