What Makes a Good King?

A Good Monarch What qualities should a good king/queen have? Is being feared more important than being loved? How do you think Elizabeth II will be remembered?

Learning Objectives 1) To investigate how King Henry VIII wanted to be portrayed. 2) To define “Propaganda” and to understand its use in history.

Henry’s armour in 1515 Henry’s armour in 1540

Old age Henry VIII was so fat that three men had to haul him out of bed in the morning. His legs had oozing scabs on them. He was almost bald. Written by a historian in 2005

“How has Holbein tried to portray Henry as a “good’ King?” You should include how the portrait portrays King Henry VIII, discuss how accurate you think this portrayal is, and explain why you think Henry VIII ordered so many copies of it to be made. Learning Objectives: 1) To investigate how King Henry VIII wanted to be portrayed. 2) To define “Propaganda” and to understand its use in history.

“How has Holbein tried to portray Henry as a “good’ King?” How does the picture portray Henry? What stance is he in? What is he wearing/holding? Do you think this portrays Henry accurately? Why do you think Henry liked this picture so much? Why might Holbein paint Henry in a favourable way? “How has Holbein tried to portray Henry as a “good’ King?” Do you think Holbein was free to paint Henry in a realistic way? If you only saw this picture, what kind of man would you think Henry was? Do you know anything about Henry that suggests he was different to how he is presented in this picture?

Propaganda Campaign Using your information sheets to help you, create your own piece of Propaganda in favour of Henry VIII. You should talk about all his good points and the good things he did. You can do this in any way you like- nothing is off limits. As an essay, a newspaper article, a poster, a flyer/leaflet, as a scripted tv advert, campaign badges, a comic strip… Use your imagination! Learning Objectives: 1) To investigate how King Henry VIII wanted to be portrayed. 2) To define “Propaganda” and to understand its use in history.
