MAKING CAREER DECISIONS IN AQUACULTURE A career is the general direction of a person’s life as related to work Talk to people who work in your career interest area Talk to people who know you and your abilities Try summer work or job shadowing in your interest area

CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD EMPLOYEES Ability to get along well with others Appropriate knowledge and skills Motivation Dedication Safety consciousness Honesty Freedom from substance abuse

TYPES OF AQ CAREERS General worker Supervisor Owner Manager Service technician Salesperson Driver Large-equipment operator

NATURE OF THE WORK AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Aquafarmer – may be the owner of an aquafarm or someone hired as manager General worker – does more of the day-to- day hands-on type activities (feeding, harvesting, etc.) Supervisor – often participates in same activities as general worker but has the authority to assign tasks

OTHER OCCUPATIONS Researcher – trained in biology, chemistry, genetics, molecular biology, aquaculture, agricultural engineering, and related areas Educator – teaches aquaculture in schools or to public through state and federal agencies Engineer – design and build special equipment and structures Health worker – determine ways of controlling and treating disease and ways to improve health

NATURE OF THE WORK AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Service technician – makes sure that the equipment used on aquafarms and processing plants work properly Salesperson – service existing customers and try to find new customers Driver – operates trucks that haul feed, fish, or equipment Equipment operator – operates bulldozers, boom trucks, tractors and may service them
