Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 2 Project Summary Goals and Scope –Integrate current testbed nodes into GENI with OMF –Add a WiMAX Base Station Kit to our existing Cisco Base station (for increased coverage and interoperability opportunities). –Independent purchase of another WiMAX base station kit for testbed use and possible applications with DoIT. –Deploy mobile nodes within current testbed MadBed –Diverse testbed with many types of connectivity throughout the city of Madison (WiMAX, various b/g providers, 3g) –Static nodes, mobile nodes –WiMAX Deployment Open GENI WiMAX Base Station Kit for Campus Deployments provided by Rutgers and one additional kit purchased by the UW. Piggyback on a campus-wide 3g deployment project to speed up the process –The Wisconsin Wireless Rover (WiRover) implements a bandwidth aggregated wide-area wireless access technology for the Internet exploits diversity to provide a reliable and high-quality Internet connection. September 1st, 2010

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 3 Milestone & QSR Status IDMilestoneStatusOn Time? On Wiki? GPO signoff? S2.AInitial integration of static and mobile nodes in MadBed testbed (except for their WiMAX components) with ORBIT. Initial deployment of Cisco Aironet 1522 mesh access points to provide preliminary testing of additional connectivity options for static and mobile nodes. This will be expanded to up to five access points in total. Successful test of setup and configuration of nodes and server for ORBIT. On Time YesNo S2.BImplementation and deployment of user trial nodes enhanced with Mobile Access Router (MAR) Initial deployment of WiRover MAR nodes on Madison Metro Transit busses. WiMAX deployment (rutgers kit) underway, purchase of additional kit nearly complete. Working with UW Facilities Planning and Maintenance to install equipment. On Time (due ) YesNo September 1st, 2010

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 4 Accomplishments 1: Advancing GENI Spiral 2 Goals Instrumentation and Measurement –WiMAX Deployment aims to provide rich instrumentation that can be used by experimenters for a variety of purposes Integration and Interoperability –Three WiMAX Base stations, b/g coverage, and 3g connectivity all available for use by mobile nodes on Madison Metro Transit city busses September 1st, 2010

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 5 Accomplishments 2: Other Project Accomplishments –Purchase of additional base station to supplement GENI-provided equipment –Live bus tracking available through WiRover project September 1st, 2010

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 6 Issues –Installation timeframe for WiMAX hardware might be unrealistic due to dependence on Facilities Planning and Maintenance, bureaucracy. However, we are lucky to be able to deploy the hardware in conjunction with another university project that has already dealt with many of the hard and time-consuming issues related to placing equipment on the roofs of various buildings September 1st, 2010

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 7 Plans What are you plans for the remainder of Spiral 2? –Complete deployment and setup of WiMAX Equipment –Continue deployment and development of WiRover nodes The GPO is starting to formulate goals for Spiral 3. What are your thoughts regarding potential Spiral 3 work? –Additional deployments in conjunction with other institutions Federation between Madison Metro Transit and the UW Additional coverage for more experimenting possibilities September 1st, 2010
