Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 2 Project Summary  OPTICAL EDGE/ACCESS NETWORKS FOR GENI  The project shall provide an experimental facility for optical edge/access networks as a part of GENI. The facility shall initially be a campus/city wide Passive Optical Network (PON) based on WDM technologies. It shall involve both hardware and software, and be programmable and virtualizable as per need of GENI. It shall also integrate with one or more GENI control frameworks. Capabilities of the facility and usage scenarios shall also be demonstrated by involving GENI users.  S3I  A single system image (SSI) is the property of a system to hide the heterogeneous and distributed nature of the available resources and present them to users and applications as a single unified computing resource.  The current GENI infrastructure allows users to select and configure resources at geographically dispersed deployments and thus create their own “slice”.  ”. Our proposed experiment will allow a user to augment his resources into a single unified system by leasing/sharing resources with his/her friends, social contacts (along the lines of a social networking model). Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 4 Accomplishments 1: Advancing GENI Spiral 2 Goals  Node virtualization, virtualized slice creation, and slice configuration using a GUI interface (DEMO).  This work was done as a proof-of-concept for the UB PON proposal.  Virtualized slice creation using Xen virtualization suite and Debian GNU/Linux (Lenny)  GUI interface enabling creation and configuration of node slices (guest operating systems intended to be controlled by the GENI users)  A preliminary implementation was demoed to Chip Elliott during his visit to UB  Attended GEC6. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation 5 Accomplishments 2: Other Project Accomplishments  NSF funding for GENI experimental study on Socially Aware Single System Image (SSI), September 2010 – August  Studied the feasibility of creating single system image clusters over LAN and WAN  Looked at existing social awareness schemes in resource sharing  Gave feedback and suggestions to GPO (Kristin Rauschenbach) with respect to the need for and benefit of starting with optical access and then feed into regional optical backbone networks.  Submitted whitepaper and attended GENI Experimenters Workshop, Princeton NJ, June 2010  Attended GEC7.  Outreach Activities  Introduced GPO (Chip Elliott) to potential partners in China.  Other Contributions  Discussion with the University at Buffalo CIO, on PON testbed feasibility and infrastructure.
