What is Science? Webster’s definition – Systematic Knowledge. Any branch of study concerned with a body of observed material facts. The word originates from scire (Latin) “to know”. The goal is to understand the world.

Scientific Law A description of what happens. The way it is. Scientific Theory The most logical explanation on why something happens. Developed from experiments.

Examples of each branch Life –Zoology Study of animals –Botany Study of plants –Herpetology Study of reptiles & amphibians

Earth –Geology Study of earth material –Meteorology Study of weather –Astronomy Study of outer space

Physical –Physics Study of how energy moves through heat and light. –Chemistry Study of how energy is stored and released from substances.
